The bottom line: If the engine has failed in a gasoline 2011 to 2014 Sonata, Hyundai may replace it for free.
A class settlement extended the engine warranty for the car’s lifetime, for every later private owner too, as long as the car has had a free knock-sensor software update.
Three cases change that. Over 150,000 miles, Hyundai can offer $2,000 or a buyback instead of an engine, unless the car’s recall covers it; a Sonata Hybrid has its own warranty; and a salvage title rules the warranty out.
Only when you have to pay does it come down to money, and a dealer engine then costs more than a 2011 Sonata sells for running.
If you end up selling, Sell Car Advisor’s comparison tool gets you several instant offers at once.

Key Takeaways
- Recall 15V-568 covers 2011 and 2012 Sonatas built in Alabama up to April 12, 2012, and 17V-226 covers 2013 and 2014 models; both pay for a free inspection and engine, and a safety recall doesn’t expire.
- The lifetime warranty passes to each later private owner, including one who bought from a dealer; dealers, auction houses and lenders can’t hold it themselves.
- Owners on CarComplaints report typical bills of $4,920 to $6,800 for a seized 2011 to 2013 engine, mostly for a replacement engine. Most paid before the lifetime warranty began, or outside it.
- A 2011 to 2013 Sonata Hybrid has its own engine recall, 20V-746, which NHTSA lists only under “Sonata Hybrid”, and a separate warranty of 15 years or 150,000 miles that is running out on the oldest cars.

Could Hyundai Replace Your Sonata’s Engine for Free?
Very possibly. The 2011 to 2014 gasoline Sonata uses Hyundai’s Theta II 2.4-liter or 2.0-liter turbo engine, and Hyundai’s recall filing says debris left from machining the crankshaft can starve the connecting-rod bearings of oil until they wear, knock and seize (recall 17V-226).
The class settlement, In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation (its site is hma-thetasettlement.com), is now final. It gives these engines a lifetime warranty on the short block, the heart of the engine, plus damage a failed rod causes.
It applies “irrespective of the Class Vehicle’s mileage, duration of ownership, or prior warranty engine repairs”, with one exception over 150,000 miles. It covers parts, labor and diagnosis, and needs no claim form.
The main condition is the knock sensor detection system, or KSDS, a free software update under Hyundai’s campaign 953. The settlement says it counts “regardless of when it is installed”.
To claim:
- Check your VIN at HyundaiUSA.com/Recall, or by calling 855-371-9460, to see whether the update and any recall were done.
- If the car is at another shop, don’t agree to a repair there. Have it towed to a Hyundai dealer; towing during a warranty repair can be claimed.
- Have the dealer do the update if it’s missing. Hyundai says it takes under an hour.
- If the engine seized before the update was done, ask the dealer to submit the claim anyway, since a late update still counts.
What If It’s Over 150,000 Miles?
Here the settlement gives Hyundai a choice. If a car needs a new engine at 150,000 miles or more and is over 8 years old, which every 2011 to 2014 Sonata now is, Hyundai can decline to replace it.
You then choose between:
- A buyback at Kelley Blue Book’s private-party value in very good condition
- A $2,000 payment in place of the engine: you keep the car, but its warranty ends
The $2,000-or-buyback choice belongs to the settlement, not the recalls, and a recall has no mileage limit. So a 2013 or 2014, or an Alabama-built 2011 or 2012, is checked under its recall first.
Compare that offer with what buyers pay for the car as it is before you accept either.
Who Is Left Out?
These are outside the settlement:
- Cars with a salvage or total-loss title
- Commercial owners, such as used-car dealers and auction houses
- The Sonata Hybrid, which has its own settlement and recall
The Hybrid’s settlement, Hyundai Engine II, gives a 15-year or 150,000-mile engine warranty from the first sale, so a 2011 Hybrid’s coverage is ending about now.
A 2011 to 2013 Hybrid is also under recall 20V-746, a free engine inspection and replacement if a bearing is worn. Search NHTSA’s site under “Sonata Hybrid”, not “Sonata”, or the recall won’t show.
A claim can be refused for a salvage title, a commercial owner, or what the settlement calls exceptional neglect: a car left visibly unmaintained for a year or more. Missing oil-change receipts alone aren’t grounds, the settlement says.
If you’re refused, send Hyundai written notice within 60 days, as the settlement’s FAQ explains. Disputes then go to arbitration run by BBB National Programs, paid for by Hyundai.
Money for repairs paid in the past, and for cars sold unrepaired, stopped taking claims in 2021, so those payments are closed. Towing and a rental of up to $40 a day during a warranty repair can still be claimed within 90 days.
How Do You Know It’s the Engine Bearings?
Once the KSDS update is on, the car tells you when the bearings wear:
- The check engine light flashes.
- A chime sounds.
- The engine drops into a reduced-power protection mode and stores code P1326.
Call a Hyundai dealer then, not a general repair shop.
Without the update, the car gives no such warning. These are the problems owners describe most often in 2,684 engine complaints to NHTSA for 2011 to 2014 Sonatas.
| What owners described | Share of engine complaints |
|---|---|
| Knocking, ticking or rattling | 30% |
| Burning or losing oil | 27% |
| Stalling | 24% |
| Engine seized or blew | 16% |
| Check engine light | 16% |
| Smoke | 9% |
If your engine was already replaced under 15V-568 or 17V-226, a third recall, 18V-934, checks the fuel pipe fitted during that swap. A 2012 built after April 12, 2012 has no engine recall but is still in the settlement.
What Would a New Engine Cost Without the Warranty?
If the warranty can’t help, where you live moves the price by about $1,500. These are Kelley Blue Book’s dealer estimates for a 2011 Sonata engine in three cities.
| City | Dealer estimate | Of which labor |
|---|---|---|
| Charlotte, NC 28202 | $7,437 to $8,007 | $2,817 to $3,051 |
| Detroit, MI 48226 | $6,197 to $6,673 | $2,347 to $2,543 |
| Las Vegas, NV 89101 | $7,706 to $8,264 | $2,928 to $3,140 |
Owners on CarComplaints report these typical bills for a seized engine, most at 77,000 to 97,000 miles:
- A 2011: $5,150
- A 2012: $4,920
- A 2013: $6,800
- A 2014: $2,500, from only nine reports
Kelley Blue Book values a 2011 Sonata GLS in good condition at $5,000 in a private sale, the SE at $4,625 and the Hybrid at $3,075.

Look up your own Sonata’s value by year: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.
| Route, 2011 GLS | What it costs you | Where it leaves you |
|---|---|---|
| Engine under the lifetime warranty | Nothing | A running car worth about $5,000 |
| Over 150,000 miles: Hyundai pays instead | Nothing | $2,000 and a car that still needs an engine, or a buyback at Kelley Blue Book value |
| New engine at a dealer, no warranty | $6,197 to $8,264 | $1,197 to $3,264 short after a $5,000 sale |
| Sell it as it is | None | Your best offer |
If You Have to Pay
Use this for a Sonata the warranty doesn’t cover. The example is a 2011 GLS: Kelley Blue Book’s dealer engine price against its private-sale value. Eight owners told NHTSA what a used or rebuilt engine cost them fitted, or what they were quoted: $4,500 to $6,400, typically about $5,150, about what that car sells for running. Put in your own quote and offer.

What If You Sell the Sonata Instead?
Selling to a dealer or junk buyer before you claim gives up the free engine. The settlement’s payments for cars sold unrepaired are closed.
A dealer or junk buyer can’t hold the warranty, so they price the dead engine in full. A private buyer inherits the warranty with the car, so claim first, or tell a private buyer it comes with it.
The settlement terms also list a separate rebate for owners who sell after a failure and buy another Hyundai within 90 days: up to $2,000 for a 2011 or 2012, and $1,500 for a 2013 or 2014.
Ask the settlement administrator whether it is still being paid before you count on it.
| Sonata | Miles | Condition | Best offer | Second offer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS | 118,000 | Starts, but does not drive | $755 | $395 |
| 2013 Hyundai Sonata SE | 135,000 | Does not start | $425 | $213 |
Those two 2013 Sonatas were quoted through My Garage, Sell Car Advisor’s offer comparison form; their owners didn’t say what had failed.
Across our offer data, buyers offered a typical $795 for a 2011 to 2014 Sonata aged 10 or more when quoted, whatever its condition, and $1,105 for a car of any make from the same years.

On a quote form’s question about whether the car starts, answer no if it stalls or needs a jump. That answer decides the tow truck, and if a car described as starting doesn’t start at pickup, the buyer can lower the offer.
The instant-offer buyers we quoted pay when they collect the car, so have the title, in your name, ready that day.
Price your Sonata as it is. Sell Car Advisor’s comparison tool collects offers from several buyers on one form, so you can set them against Hyundai’s offer or a repair quote.
