The bottom line: To sell a junk car in Oklahoma, sign the title over to the buyer. Your signature must be notarized, but the buyer’s does not. Oklahoma has no emissions or safety inspection to pass first.
Titles issued since July 1, 2025 are electronic. To sell a car with one, fill in Form 718 and have it notarized, and it takes the place of the paper title.
Without a title, a car over ten model years old that can’t run or be fixed can be sold on Form 766. So can a car sold to a scrap metal dealer. Otherwise, a new title on Form 701-7 costs $11, and you can’t apply online.
A bill of sale isn’t required; without one or a contract, the buyer swears to the price on Form 722-1. Keep your license plate; you can move it to another car you own. Reporting the sale on Form 773 is optional.
In Oklahoma, the typical offer in our data for a junk car 10 years or older is $400.

How Do You Sell a Junk Car in Oklahoma?
Six steps, in the order they happen.
Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers
Each quote form wants the same details: year, make, model, mileage, your ZIP code, and whether the car starts. Filling one in takes a few minutes.
The VIN speeds it up. It is on the plate at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side, on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb, and on your registration card.
Answer the condition questions as the car is today. A converter that has been cut off, wheels that are gone, or an engine that is out all change the number, and the driver looks for each of them before paying.
Get at least three quotes. None of them commits you to anything.
Step 2: Check your paperwork
Get the title and a photo ID out before you accept anything. The name on the title has to be yours, and no lender can still be listed on it. Either problem is dealt with before the pickup is booked, not on the day.
Odometer reading: you write the mileage on the title when you sign it, or on a separate form, unless the car is old enough to be exempt.
Separate odometer form: Form 729 Odometer Disclosure Statement, required when the title has no odometer space.
Every form you might need
None of these is needed for a plain junk sale with the title in your hand. Each one covers a gap: the title is missing, the car is being junked without one, or you want the state to have your sale on record.
Certificate of ownership
For junking a qualifying car with no title. Which cars qualify.
Notice of transfer
Form 773 (Notice of Transfer of Ownership)
Filed once the car has left. How and when.
Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
Accept online or by phone. The buyer passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company contacts you to set a pickup window.
You meet the driver, hand over the notarized title, and take the money. If someone else will do that for you, tell the buyer when you book.
Tell the tow company now if the car is behind a locked gate or boxed in by another car. The driver needs a straight run at it.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
Clear a path from the road to the car, long enough for a flatbed to drop its bed behind it. Move any other car off the driveway that morning.
Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glove box, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well. Take off any toll pass or parking permit. Anything left in the car goes with it.
Plates stay with you. Take them off before the truck arrives.
Lost keys do not stop the pickup, because the driver winches the car on. Say so on the quote form, since a driver with no key and a flat battery cannot read the mileage. The rest is in our guide to selling a car with lost keys.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The notary rule: Only the seller's signature needs to be witnessed by a notary, not the buyer's.
Notary fee and where to find one: up to $5 per notarial act, at Service Oklahoma or a Licensed Operator tag agency, or with any Oklahoma notary.
A tow driver cannot witness a signature, so where a notary is required, the trip to the notary comes before pickup day. Sign the seller’s line in front of the notary and nothing else on the title.
The driver looks the car over and takes the title you signed at the notary.
You are paid before the car goes on the truck, so count the cash or read the check before it moves.
Keep any paper the driver leaves with you, and check your inbox, because some buyers email the bill of sale and the confirmation instead. The notice you file afterwards asks who bought the car: put the company from your offer confirmation, not the tow driver’s name.
Step 6: File the notice and deal with the plates
Plates: keep the plate and transfer it to another vehicle you own.
Form to move a plate to another car: a credit for the time left on the tags when you bring the plate to the registration visit for your next vehicle.
How to tell the state: Complete Form 773 and file it online through OkCARS at service.ok.gov, or deliver or mail it with the $10 filing fee to any Oklahoma tag agency.
Deadline: the notice is optional and has no deadline.
If you skip it: no penalty; Form 773 is an optional notice that records the sale in Service Oklahoma's files.
Keep a copy of the notice, because it shows the day the car stopped being yours. The buyer’s paperwork does not do this for you.
Cancel the insurance last, after the car has gone and the notice is filed. If the pickup slips a day, the car is still yours that night, and it should still be insured.

What Is Your Junk Car Worth in Oklahoma?
In Oklahoma, buyers typically offer $400 for a junk car (cars 10 years and older, 119 offers, ranked 44 of 44 states). Across the country, half of all offers on old cars fall between $375 and $1,075. Both figures come from our own quote data.
Of the junk cars quoted in Oklahoma, 46% are sedans, coupes and hatchbacks, offered $415 in the middle. Ford is the make quoted most often, and its typical offer is $390. Buyers typically offer $355 for cars 15 years and older, from our own quote data.
Nothing moves the offer more than the catalytic converter. With the converter gone, and age and mileage matched, the offer against a comparable car with it moves by about -57%. If it is missing, say so on the form.
Whether the engine starts is the next thing. Against a comparable car that drives, once age and mileage are matched, a car that won’t start moves the offer by about -46%.
The same figures for every state are on our junk car value statistics page.

Copart owns CashForCars, and a car it buys in Oklahoma goes on to a Copart auction.

Collect all three numbers even if the first one looks fine. When two or more buyers quote the same car on the same day through our own quote form, the highest and lowest offers are typically $314 apart.
If the car still starts and drives and has a clean title, a private sale usually pays more than a junk buyer. Our guide to selling a car privately in Oklahoma covers the paperwork.
Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Oklahoma?
Yes, in the cases the state lists. There are three ways to do it.
Option 1: The no-title route. Oklahoma’s conditions for a no-title sale: the vehicle is not within the last ten model years, not roadworthy, and not capable of repair, or it is being sold to a scrap metal dealer. The legal basis: 47 O.S. Section 1105 subsection R authorizes transfer of a vehicle on a certificate of ownership when the title is lost, canceled, or otherwise not available.
The form for that route: Form 766 Certificate of Ownership, signed by seller and buyer; the seller files one copy with Service Oklahoma or a Licensed Operator and pays the $4 filing fee.
Say on the form that the title is missing, and let the buyer tell you whether the yard it uses can take the car that way.
Option 2: A replacement title first. Every buyer can then quote the car.
Option 3: Sell the parts. No title is needed to sell a part on its own. Expect weeks rather than days.
Getting a Replacement Title in Oklahoma
What a replacement title takes in Oklahoma:
- Application: Form 701-7
- Where to submit: in person at Service Oklahoma (N Classen) or a Licensed Operator, or by mail to Service Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Division, P.O. Box 26800, Oklahoma City, OK 73126
- Fee: $11, plus a $1.66 mail fee when you apply by mail
- Processing time: no published processing time; Service Oklahoma asks you to contact it if nothing has arrived after 21 days
Send the application off before you collect quotes. A quote does not need the title in hand, so both waits run at once. Bring a photo ID, since the application asks who is signing.
If the old title turns up after you have applied, the replacement is the one you sign over.
If a lender still holds the title
A car with a lien on it cannot be sold to anyone until the lien is released.
How the lien comes off: the lienholder releases the lien through Oklahoma's Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) system, and there is no fee to release a lien in the state system.
Ask the lender for the payoff figure before you accept a quote. If the balance is bigger than the offer, you pay the difference, and the payoff and the release are covered in our guide to selling a financed car.
If your title is electronic
All titles issued on or after July 1, 2025 are electronic, and an existing paper title stays valid until its next transaction. To sell a car with an electronic title, you print Form 718, Bill of Sale of an Electronic Title, fill it in and have it notarized, and it takes the place of the paper title. Have it ready before pickup day, because the driver takes it away with the car.
If the car is titled in another state
A title from another state is signed over the way that state’s rules say, and the buyer handles the Oklahoma paperwork. Name the issuing state on the quote form.
If that title is lost, only the state that issued it can replace it. Oklahoma replaces Oklahoma titles and no others.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
The buyer pays whoever is named on the title. For a car that belonged to someone who has died, Oklahoma’s paperwork is one of these: Letters testamentary plus the death certificate when probated, or Form 798 No Administrator Affidavit when no probate and no superior claim. Once the title is in your name, the junk sale is the same as any other.
Oklahoma’s rule on a gifted car: Only the registered owner shown on the title may complete the affidavit, it must be notarized, and the transfer must involve no consideration at all.
If someone abandoned a car on your property, you cannot sign it over, because you never owned it. The abandoned vehicle process comes first, and it starts with the police, not a buyer.
Local Dismantlers vs Online Buyers in Oklahoma
Selling to a local yard
A yard works from the weight of the car and the scrap price that week. The figure comes by phone, and nothing is written down until you are there.
Ask two things before you agree: whether the yard collects the car, and whether the collection is taken out of the price. A sale without a title depends on the yard’s license, so ask what it holds.
Selling to an online buyer
An online buyer quotes from the form and puts the number in writing. The tow is part of the offer, and the truck it sends is a local one.
Three written numbers fit in one afternoon, and the highest of them is the one the yard has to beat.
Our guide to how online buyers work out an offer goes through what moves the number.
When selling it yourself makes sense
Somebody who wants the engine or the body for another car of the same model may offer more than any junk buyer. It takes weeks, the buyer brings the trailer, and you write the ad and take the calls.
Storing a Junk Car in Oklahoma
Each city sets its own rules on a car that does not run kept in view of the street, so ask yours before the car sits for months.
While it waits, the battery goes flat, the tires lose air, and a hailstorm can break the glass. Put a pan under the engine if it leaks. If it has to wait, our guide on how to store a junk car explains what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to sell a junk car in Oklahoma?
A few days. Quotes come back in minutes, and the tow company sets the pickup date.
If the title is missing, the replacement wait comes before any of that.
Is a bill of sale required to junk a car in Oklahoma?
Bill of sale: not required.
It is still worth having as your record of the price and the day. Our bill of sale generator makes one in a minute.
Does dealing with the plates release me from liability in Oklahoma?
Dealing with the plates releases you from liability: no; Form 773 Notice of Transfer is your record of the sale.
Only the notice puts your sale date on the state’s record.
Does a junk car need an emissions test to sell in Oklahoma?
Emissions test to sell: no testing required.
Junk buyers do not ask for test results.
Can I junk a car with expired registration in Oklahoma?
Yes. The tag is about driving on the road, and the car is leaving on a truck. You don’t need to renew it first.
An old registration card is still worth keeping, as one more paper with your name and the VIN on it.
What happens to my junk car after I sell it in Oklahoma?
The yard takes off what can be sold again, drains the fluids, and crushes the rest for scrap steel.
What if the junk car offer changes when the driver arrives in Oklahoma?
The driver compares the car with your form, and a converter or wheels that are missing but were not mentioned can bring the number down.
Nothing obliges you to accept the lower number. Until you sign the title the car is still yours, so you can send the truck away and use one of your other quotes.
Is it worth repairing my car instead of junking it in Oklahoma?
Compare the repair estimate with the difference between the junk offer and the running price. When the repair costs more than that difference, the repair does not pay.
A car with a good engine or a rare part can also be sold for parts.
