The bottom line: CashForCars is Copart’s service for buying cars from the public. It makes instant offers on cars in almost any condition, including cars that won’t start, have been in a wreck or carry a salvage title, tows them away for free and hands you a check at pickup.
Choose it for a damaged or non-running car that private buyers would turn down, when you want it gone without ads or meeting strangers.
Before you accept, describe the car exactly, and say if a part has been replaced, such as the catalytic converter. The offer can be cut or withdrawn at pickup if the driver finds damage you didn’t disclose.
For a car that runs well and is worth thousands, get a dealer’s offer too before you accept: sellers of cars like that report CashForCars offered far less than a dealer paid.
In our test of three damaged cars, CashForCars offered the most on the Chevy Trailblazer and the Honda Accord, by $13 and $2, and $10 less than Wheelzy and Peddle on the Subaru Outback.

How to Sell a Car to CashForCars?
1. Get Your Quote
Go to CashForCars’ website or call (877) 748-6945 for an instant offer. Describe the damage exactly, and say if a part has been replaced, such as the catalytic converter, because the offer is for the car as you describe it.
2. Compare Your Options
Your offer is good for a limited time, with no set period, and CashForCars can change or withdraw it at any time before you’re paid.
Before you accept, get offers from Wheelzy and Peddle too. Our comparison form can ask all three for you at once.
3. Accept and Schedule Pickup
Accept online, by text or by phone, and CashForCars passes the sale to its nearest location. One of its towing partners then calls you to set the pickup day and place.
4. Get Paid at Pickup
The tow driver comes in the window you agreed. If the car is at a repair shop, tell the shop in writing not to release it until you’re there or the check is handed over: sellers report cars taken from a shop without the title or the payment.
The driver checks the car against what you described. If it has damage or missing parts you didn’t disclose, the offer can be cut or withdrawn there and then. You can turn a lower price down and keep the car, but ask before you accept whether a fee applies if you do: some sellers report a charge of $125 or $180 for the wasted trip.
Don’t sign the title over until the check is in your hand and matches the offer. Sellers at some yards report their bank held the check for days before they could spend it.
How Much Money Can You Get?
In a separate quote test of ours on 145 cars with 29 kinds of problem, from a dead battery to fire damage, CashForCars’ website gave an instant offer on 127 and asked for a phone call before giving a figure on the other 18. Its instant offers ran from $372 to $3,566.
On the 63 of those cars where Wheelzy and Peddle also gave instant offers, CashForCars’ was the highest on 14.

Common Questions About Selling to CashForCars
What is CashForCars?
CashForCars.com is the service Copart, the vehicle auction company, runs to buy cars from the public. Copart started as a single salvage yard in Vallejo, California, and CashForCars has bought more than 1.4 million cars.
Is CashForCars the same as Copart?
Yes. CashForCars.com is Copart’s own car-buying service. You will see both names during the sale, and the check comes from Copart or a buyer in its network.
Copart Direct is another name Copart buys cars under.
What do Copart Cash for Cars reviews say?
CashForCars has 4.3/5 on Trustpilot from 8,874 reviews. Google ratings vary by location, since each of the 200 yards has its own listing.
Sellers praise how quick and easy the sale was, drivers who came with the check for the full amount, and offers higher than local junkyards’. Some scheduled a drop-off at a yard instead of a pickup. The complaints are about offers cut after the quote, before the truck came or at the door, pickups that were late or missed, and long phone calls with a different person each time.
How long does the whole process take?
The offer is instant, and in most cases CashForCars can pick the car up within 24 hours of your accepting it. You’re paid at pickup.
What documents do I need?
A signed title in your name, with any loan on the car paid off. Have your driver’s license ready as well, and look up how your state wants the title signed before you sign it: some sellers were also asked for a notarized power of attorney or a photo of the signed title before pickup, and some were given signing instructions that turned out to be wrong.
Can I sell a car that won’t run?
Yes. CashForCars buys cars that won’t start or run, and tows them away for free.
How do they pay?
By check, handed to you when the driver collects the car, or mailed to the address you choose if you can’t be there. Its terms also allow cash, Venmo, PayPal and Zelle, but sellers report being paid by check.
Do they handle the paperwork?
Yes, the title transfer and the bill of sale, and the driver helps you sign the title at pickup. Filing your state’s release of liability, if it has one, stays with you, so do it the day the car goes.
Can I sell without a title?
No. CashForCars needs a signed title in your name, so get a replacement title from your state’s DMV first. Its title specialists can help you with the process.
What kinds of vehicles do they buy?
Cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, motorcycles, boats and RVs, running or not. Not every vehicle gets an offer: a car’s age or damage can rule it out.
Can I pick an exact pickup time?
No. Its towing partner calls to set a day and gives you a window, and sellers report windows as wide as 8 AM to 5 PM, or the whole of the next day. Keep that day free, and if the car is somewhere that charges storage, allow two days.
What if I don’t like their offer?
Turn it down: the quote carries no obligation. Some sellers who asked for more, or sent photos, were offered more.
How do they decide what to pay?
Its algorithm sets the offer from real-time market data, taking in the car’s model year, its damage and its current market value.
Where do they operate?
Everywhere in the lower 48 states, from nearly 200 locations. Alaska and Hawaii are the two states where it doesn’t pick up.
Is Cash for Cars legit?
Yes. CashForCars is Copart’s own car-buying service, and Copart, Inc., a public company, lists it in its annual report to the SEC. The Better Business Bureau rates Copart A-.
