The bottom line: Carvana is the buyer to try first for a car under ten years old in good condition. You get an offer online in about two minutes, and the sale closes at a 15-minute appointment, with no haggling and no strangers test-driving your car.
Dropping the car off is free, and pickup, where Carvana offers it, cost from $0 to $600 in our test offers, depending on where you live. If the appointment finds something you didn’t mention, the offer can drop, and you can say no and keep the car.
An accident on the record can bring the offer right down: our 2022 Toyota Corolla with 27,000 miles and one accident was quoted $100.
Its offer isn’t always the highest. In our test of three newer cars, Carvana offered the most on the Tesla Model 3, by $2,124, and CarGurus offered $2,500 more on the Ford F-150 and $1,100 more on the Toyota RAV4.

How Does Carvana Compare to Alternatives?
We got quotes from Carvana, CarGurus, and WeBuyAnyCarUSA for the same three vehicles to see how they stack up.
2018 Tesla Model 3 with 73k miles Carvana +$2,124

2022 Toyota Corolla with 7k mileage and a clean title: $17,000
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 103k mileage: $13,600 offer
2021 Ford F-150 with 105k mileage and a clean title: $17,000
2023 Ford F-150 with 37k mileage and clean title: $38,800
The trade-off here is price versus reliability. CarGurus connects you with dealers who might change their offer after seeing your car. Carvana’s offer doesn’t change at the appointment if you describe your car honestly and finish the sale within the 7 days the offer lasts. So you might get a higher offer from CarGurus, but there’s a higher risk the price will change.

What Cars Will Carvana Buy?
Carvana buys a car or truck newer than 1992 with a working odometer, as long as it’s safe to drive, because Carvana checks that at the appointment before it takes the car. It sets no mileage limit and no damage rule beyond that, so wear, dents and high miles lower the offer rather than rule the car out.
If Your Car Doesn’t Run
Carvana won’t buy a car that won’t start, so get your offers from buyers that take non-running cars.
If It’s Old or Has High Miles
Carvana still quotes any car newer than 1992, but its offers are strongest on cars under ten years old in good condition, because mileage and accident history set its price. On an older car, compare its quote with the buyers that pay most for old cars before you accept.
If It Has a Salvage Title or Major Damage
Salvage and rebuilt titles, flood damage and frame damage are outside Carvana’s market. For a car like that, compare offers from salvage title buyers.
If You Don’t Have the Title
Carvana won’t buy a car you own outright without its title, and it accepts an electronic title only in Florida, Arizona and Ohio. Order a duplicate from your DMV first, or sell to a buyer that takes cars without a title.
How to Sell a Car to Carvana?
1. Get Your Quote Online
Go to Carvana’s website and type in your car’s make, model, year, and mileage. The system figures out your trim level and asks about any extra features your car has.
Next comes the condition. Describe it exactly, because Carvana checks it against Carfax and AutoCheck at pickup, and anything you left out lowers the price then.
Your offer shows up in just a few minutes. Its system looks at recent sales, what it already has in stock, and what cars are selling for in your area.
2. Schedule Your Pickup or Drop-off
Once you accept the offer, you upload photos of your ID, title and odometer, and Carvana approves the sale before you book. You can drop the car off free at a Carvana location or vending machine, or book home pickup where Carvana offers it; whether pickup costs anything, and how much, depends on your location.
In some locations, Carvana can buy your car the same day you get your offer.
3. Complete the Sale
A Carvana rep meets you at your home or at the vending machine. They look over the car to make sure it matches what you said online.
This takes about 15 minutes. They check the VIN and the mileage, look for damage you didn’t mention, run a simple diagnostic check and make sure the car is safe to drive. If everything matches, they pay you and handle the title transfer right there.
If they find something different from what you reported, they can change the price, but you don’t have to accept it: you can say no and keep your car.
How Much Can You Get?
What Carvana offers depends on your car’s features, accident history, mileage and service records, plus price guides and the demand for that model on its site.
An accident on record, or a car that doesn’t fit what Carvana is looking for, can bring the offer right down: our 2022 Toyota Corolla with 27k miles and one accident was quoted $100.
Carvana Reviews – What Other Sellers Say?
Book your appointment soon after you accept the offer. Sellers praise how quick the appointment is and being paid on the spot, and their complaints are mostly about offers that ran out while documents or a missed pickup held up the sale.

Common Questions About Selling to Carvana
How long does the whole thing take?
About 3 to 10 days on average, from the offer to the appointment where you’re paid, and the same day in some locations. Before you can book, Carvana checks the documents you upload, which can take 24 to 48 business hours.
Can I sell a car I still owe money on?
Yes. Carvana pays your lender directly when it buys the car and pays you whatever is left over. If you owe more than the offer, you pay Carvana the difference, by certified check or, where Carvana offers it, by card.
Keep making your loan payments until the lender shows the loan paid off, because the lender can take several days to process the payoff. Any overpayment comes back to you.
Will they stick to the price they quoted online?
Yes, if the car matches what you described and you finish the sale within the 7 days the offer lasts. If the appointment finds something different, Carvana makes you a new offer.
Book the appointment as soon as you accept, because an offer that runs out has to be quoted again, and the new one can be lower. Sellers report document checks and missed pickups using up the seven days.
How do I get paid?
By a printed check handed to you at the appointment, or a direct deposit Carvana starts there, which takes one to five business days to arrive. Deposit the check with a teller at your bank: Carvana’s checks have to be deposited in person.
What paperwork do I need?
You upload photos of your ID, title and odometer, then bring your ID, every key and, if you own the car outright, the title to the appointment. Your registration doesn’t need to be current, except in California. With a loan, Carvana asks for a 10-day payoff statement from your lender.
Can I change my mind?
Yes, until the car changes hands at the appointment. After that the sale is final, and Carvana won’t give the car back.
Do they charge any fees?
Pickup fees ran from $0 to $600 in our test offers, depending on where you live, and Carvana shows yours when you schedule. If you drop off at a vending machine instead, there’s no fee.
Should I clean my car first?
Take out your belongings and bring every key and accessory. Detailing won’t raise the offer, because it’s set online from your answers, and the appointment only checks that the car matches them.
Can I sell my leased car to Carvana?
Yes, if the lease is with one of the 13 leasing companies Carvana buys from, such as Toyota Financial Services, Lexus, Subaru or Chase, and has more than 30 days left. Enter the lease on the quote form, and Carvana gives you the next steps with your offer.
Where is Carvana available?
Drop-off is open to every seller, at a Carvana location or vending machine, but pickup is offered only in some areas. Plan for the drive: some sellers learned only at the last step that their area had no pickup, then drove more than 100 miles to drop the car off.
Can I trade in my car instead of just selling it?
Yes, if you’re also buying from Carvana. In most states you then pay sales tax only on the difference between the new car’s price and your trade-in’s value, but not in California, Hawaii, Virginia or DC; Ohio gives the break only on new cars, not a used one from Carvana, and Oklahoma’s covers only part of the tax. Carvana keeps the trade-in even if you return the car you bought.
Do I have to buy a car from Carvana to sell them mine?
No. You can just sell without buying anything. The process and the price are the same either way.
What happens after I accept their offer?
You upload your documents, and once Carvana approves them, you pick a time for pickup or drop-off.
Is Carvana legitimate?
Yes. Carvana is a publicly traded company that buys thousands of cars a week from people selling them, and it has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
