I want to take the guesswork out of selling your car. I analyze market data, decode DMV title laws, and test out online car buyers to give you a straight answer on whether it's worth holding out for a higher price or if you're better off taking the most convenient offer and moving on.

The bottom line: CarMax is a large used car retailer that buys vehicles directly from sellers. They have over 250 stores across the country, so most people live near one.

You can get a quote online in about two minutes, and your offer stays good for seven days.

CarMax works best for newer cars with low miles. They now offer at-home pickup in most areas, so you don’t have to drive to a store. The inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes, and you get paid the same day you accept.

The main catch is payment. CarMax only pays by check. Your bank might hold that money for 5 to 10 business days before you can use it. Many sellers also report that the final in-store offer drops from the online quote.

In our tests, CarMax paid less than Carvana and WeBuyAnyCarUSA on all three vehicles we checked. Compare offers from multiple services with Sell Car Advisor before deciding.

What We Like

  • Free inspection with no pressure to buy a car from them
  • Free Lyft ride home within 60 miles after selling your car
  • Over 250 stores nationwide, so most sellers have one nearby
  • At-home pickup now available in most markets starting November 2025
  • Online quotes take about two minutes to get
  • Offers stay valid for seven days so you have time to shop around
  • They buy cars with loans and handle the payoff for you
  • No trade-in required to sell them your car
  • Express drop-off option lets you finish in under 30 minutes at the store
  • Offer Watch tool tracks your car’s value over time so you can pick the best time to sell
  • Same-day payment when you accept their offer
  • They handle all the paperwork and title transfer

What You Should Know

  • In-store offers often drop from the online quote after the inspection.
  • Payment is by check only, not cash.
  • Banks may hold the check for 5 to 10 business days before you get your money.
  • Wait times at busy stores can hit 4 hours.
  • Service quality varies a lot depending on which store you visit.
  • Online quotes are not always instant, sometimes you need to upload photos or visit a store.
  • Our tests showed CarMax paid less than competitors on all three vehicles we checked.
  • Loan payoffs can take up to 18 days, which may affect your credit if you stop making payments too early.

How to Sell a Car to CarMax?

1. Get Your Online Quote

Go to CarMax’s website and enter your car’s details. You’ll type in the VIN or license plate, then add info about the model, condition, features, and any damage. The whole thing takes about two minutes.

CarMax will give you a price range that stays good for 7 days. This gives you time to compare with other buyers before you decide.

Heads up: You might not always get an instant online offer. Sometimes CarMax asks for photos or wants you to visit a store to get the real number.

2. Schedule Your Appointment

You have two choices here. You can book a time to visit a CarMax store, or you can pick at-home pickup if it’s available in your area. Same-day appointments work at most stores if you’re in a hurry.

Walk-ins are fine too, but you’ll wait longer. Morning appointments tend to move faster since the store hasn’t gotten backed up yet.

Note: CarMax rolled out at-home pickup nationwide in November 2025. A CarMax person will come to your house, check the car, do the paperwork, and drive it away. A fee may apply depending on where you live.

3. Get Your Car Inspected

The inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes. They check everything: how it runs, how it looks, and what needs fixing. They test drive it and pull the history report.

They measure tire tread, check brake wear, and test every button and screen. This is why in-store offers often drop from online quotes. The inspection catches things the online form misses.

Add in waiting time, and you could be at the store for 4 hours on a busy day. If you use express drop-off or at-home pickup, this goes faster.

4. Accept Your Offer and Get Paid

After the inspection, CarMax gives you a final offer. If you like it, you can accept on the spot. They handle all the paperwork and hand you a check the same day.

If you need time to think, the offer stays good for 7 days. You can shop around and come back if CarMax has the best price.

Heads up: CarMax pays by check only. No cash option. Your bank will probably hold the money for 5 to 10 business days before you can use it. If you need cash fast, this could be a problem.

How Much Does CarMax Pay?

CarMax pays more for newer cars in good shape. If your car is under 3 years old with low miles and no problems, you might get close to what you’d get in a private sale. Older cars or high-mileage vehicles get much lower offers.

Here’s a general idea of what to expect based on your car’s age:

Type of CarWhat to Expect
Newer cars (under 3 years)Usually within 5-10% of private sale price
Middle-aged cars (4-7 years)About 10-15% below private sale price
Older cars (8+ years)Often 20-30% below private sale price
Hybrid carsVaries based on current market

CarMax Reviews – What Other Sellers Say?

Reviews on CarMax are mixed. Some sellers love how fast and professional the process is. Others complain that offers are too low compared to what they expected or what competitors offered.

On Reddit, several sellers said Carvana beat CarMax by 15 to 25 percent. Payment issues also come up often in reviews, since bank holds on the check can cause problems for people who need money fast.

How CarMax Compares to Other Buyers

We tested CarMax against Carvana and WeBuyAnyCarUSA in January 2026. We got quotes on three different vehicles from all three companies.

VehicleCarMaxCarvanaWeBuyAnyCarUSA
2018 Tesla Model 3 (73,000 mi)$11,400$14,200$12,076
2022 Ford F-150 XL (72,500 mi)$18,400$22,000$21,501
2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE (61,505 mi)$22,400$24,600$24,441

For the 2018 Tesla Model 3, CarMax offered $11,400. Carvana came in highest at $14,200, and WeBuyAnyCarUSA offered $12,076. Carvana won by $2,800 over CarMax.

For the 2022 Ford F-150 XL, CarMax offered $18,400. Carvana offered $22,000, and WeBuyAnyCarUSA offered $21,501. Carvana won again, beating CarMax by $3,600.

For the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE, CarMax offered $22,400. Carvana offered $24,600, and WeBuyAnyCarUSA offered $24,441. This was the closest race, but Carvana still won by $2,200.

CarMax came in last on all three vehicles. That said, CarMax has way more physical locations if you prefer selling in person. And their at-home pickup is now available in most areas. You might choose them for convenience even if the offer is a bit lower.

Common Questions About Selling to CarMax

How long does the whole process take?

Usually 30 minutes to 2 hours. On busy days, it can stretch to 4 hours. The car inspection itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The rest is waiting time and paperwork.

If you use express drop-off with a pre-accepted online offer, you can finish in under 30 minutes.

What happens if I still owe money on my car?

CarMax buys cars with loans. They pay the lender directly. But this takes longer, sometimes up to 18 days.

Keep making your car payments until the loan shows as paid off. Some sellers on Trustpilot mentioned credit score problems because they stopped paying too early.

Will the final offer match my online quote?

Usually not. Most sellers say the in-store offer drops from the online quote. CarMax says this happens because the inspection finds problems that the online form couldn’t catch.

How exactly does payment work?

CarMax pays by company check. You have to deposit it at your bank. You can’t cash it.

Most banks hold CarMax checks for 5 to 10 business days before you get full access to the money. Some banks release part of it sooner. If you need cash right away, this could be a problem.

How strict are they about car condition?

They check everything pretty closely, but they’re fair about normal wear. They look at mechanical issues, body damage, and tire condition.

Minor problems usually just lower the offer instead of killing the deal.

Can I negotiate their offer?

CarMax says their offers are firm. But some sellers report getting a few hundred dollars more by showing competitor quotes or asking for a manager.

Don’t expect big jumps though. Their whole model is built around no-haggle pricing.

What documents do I need to bring?

Bring your title or loan info, registration, all keys and fobs, driver’s license, and proof of insurance.

If multiple people are on the title, everyone needs to sign. Some situations like estates need extra paperwork.

Can I sell a modified car?

Yes, but modifications usually lower the offer. CarMax wants cars close to stock.

Some mods might get you declined, especially safety or emissions changes.

What if I change my mind?

Once you sign the paperwork, the sale is done. That’s why they give you 7 days to think about the offer before accepting.

Use that time to shop around and compare with other buyers.

Do they buy old or damaged cars?

CarMax will buy most cars, but they pay much less for older models or damaged vehicles. They won’t buy cars with salvage titles, frame damage, or flood damage.

If your car has serious problems, try companies that handle problem cars like Peddle or Wheelzy.

What is Offer Watch?

Offer Watch is a free tool CarMax launched in 2026. It tracks your car’s value over time so you can pick the best moment to sell.

You get monthly updates based on your mileage, condition, and current market trends. When you’re ready to sell, you’ll need to confirm your car’s details to get a fresh, active offer.

Is CarMax legitimate?

Yes, CarMax is a legit company. They’re the largest used car retailer in the country with over 250 stores. They’ve been in business for more than 30 years and are publicly traded on the NYSE.
