How Do You Sell a Junk Car in Idaho?
Six steps. The first five happen at your home, and the last one is paperwork.
Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers
Every buyer’s form wants the same things: year, make, model, mileage, ZIP code, and what is wrong with the car. Some buyers also want the VIN, which is printed on the driver’s side of the dashboard where it meets the windshield, and on your insurance card.
The figure that comes back is built from your answers. Say what is missing and whether the car rolls, because the driver checks all of it at pickup and any difference comes off the offer.
Get at least three quotes. None of them commits you to anything.
Step 2: Check your paperwork
You need the title with your name on it and a photo ID that matches. A lender printed on the title stops the sale until the lien comes off.

A junk sale with the title in hand needs one form, the release of liability. The others apply when the title is missing or the car is not yet in your name.

Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
When you accept, the buyer passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company contacts you to set a day and a window of a few hours. Mention then if the car is hard to reach.
You meet the driver, sign the title, and take the money. The driver compares your ID with the title before anything is signed.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
A flatbed needs a straight run at the car and room to lower its bed. Move anything parked in front of it, and clear the snow off the driveway in winter.
Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glove box, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well.
Plates stay with you. Take them off before the truck arrives.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The driver looks the car over against your description, then you sign the seller’s section of the title.
Odometer reading on the title: required for model year 2011 and newer vehicles weighing under 16,000 pounds; model year 2010 and older vehicles, trailers and vehicles over 16,000 pounds are exempt.
Take the payment before the car is loaded and check it against the quote you accepted.
Keep any paper the driver leaves with you, and check your inbox, because some buyers email the bill of sale and the confirmation instead. The buyer’s name and address go on the release of liability. Take both from the offer confirmation, because the driver works for a tow company, not for the buyer.
Step 6: File the release and deal with the plates
What to do with the plates: take the plates off the vehicle and keep them; they can be transferred to another vehicle titled to the same owner with credit for any remaining time on the registration, except black and white restricted plates.
Deadline for the release of liability: 5 days.
The buyer’s own paperwork does not take your name off the car. Your filing does.
Cancel the insurance last, after the car has gone and the notice is filed. If the truck comes a day late, the car is still yours that day and still has to be insured.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Idaho?
Yes, for some cars. Idaho allows a sale without the title on these terms: the vehicle must be a 2010 or older model year, weigh over 16,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, or have no odometer device.
Option 1: Sell on the state’s form. The form is Form ITD 3369 (Duplicate Idaho Title Application With Ownership Transfer), and it applies for the duplicate and transfers the car to the buyer in one document. Read its signature instructions before pickup day, because a form that needs a witness cannot be signed at the car.
The rule that allows it: Idaho Code section 49-502 subsection 2 allows sale without a physical title for qualifying vehicles by delivering a completed duplicate title application with assignment of ownership.
Check with the buyer before you book that it accepts the form, since some quote systems expect a title by default.
Option 2: Get a replacement title, then sell. This opens up every buyer.
Option 3: Sell the parts. Parts change hands without a title because the car itself is not transferred. It takes weeks, and the shell still has to go to a yard.

If a lender still holds the title
Idaho accepts a release from the lender in these forms: the lienholder signs the release on the title record, or attaches a separate written release; on an electronic title, ITD prints the paper title and mails it to the customer the day after the lien is released.

If your title is electronic
Paperless Idaho titles are issued when a lienholder in Idaho's ELT program records a lien, and the title stays paperless until the lien is paid; once the lienholder releases it electronically, ITD prints the title and mails it to the customer the following day. The driver takes a paper title with the car, so check that one is in your hand before you book the pickup.
If the car is titled in another state
You can sell a car in Idaho on another state’s title, and nothing has to be retitled here first. Say which state issued it on the quote form.
Sign the seller’s part the way that title says. If that title is lost, the state that issued it replaces it, not Idaho.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
The buyer pays the person on the title and the driver checks the ID against it. Put the title in your name before you get quotes.
You inherited the car. For an heir, Idaho uses Form ITD 3414 (Affidavit of Inheritance) where the owner died without a will, or Form ITD 3413 (Small Estate Affidavit) for a small estate. Once the title is in your name, the junk sale runs as usual.
Someone gave you the car. A gifted car has its own paperwork: Both parties sign the gift affidavit. For a family sale the seller must have paid tax when they bought the vehicle.
Gift form: ST-133GT, Gift Transfer Affidavit, for a gift. ST-133 for a sale between qualifying family members.
A car was dumped on your land. Since it was never yours, you cannot transfer it. Idaho’s abandoned vehicle process comes first, and it takes weeks.

A yard buys by weight at that week’s scrap price, so the same car gets a different number in a different week. Ask two or three yards before you agree with one.
