Step 2: Check your paperwork
Get the title and a photo ID out before you accept anything. The name on the title has to be yours, and no lender can still be listed on it.
The odometer line on the back of the title has its own rule: required for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, with model year 2010 and older, trailers, and vehicles over 16,000 lbs GVWR exempt.

You accept the offer online or on the phone. The buyer then passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company calls to set a pickup window.
You meet the driver, sign the title, and take the money. If someone else will do that for you, tell the buyer when you book.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
The truck needs a straight line to the car and room to drop its bed behind it. A car boxed in by a garage wall or a snowbank is something to mention when you book, not when the driver pulls up.
Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glovebox, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well.
Plates stay with the seller. Take them off before the truck arrives.

Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The driver looks the car over and you sign the back of the title. Payment is usually cash or check. It depends on the tow company.
You are paid before the car goes on the truck, so count the cash or read the check before it moves.
Title transfer: at the time of sale; buyer submits signed title to Wisconsin DMV.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Wisconsin?
Yes, in one case. Which of the three options fits depends on whether the car could ever be driven again.
Option 1: Junk it without the title. Wisconsin allows a no-title sale on these terms: the car goes to a licensed salvage dealer as junk and will never be driven again, no lien is outstanding, and you prove your identity with a driver license or photo ID; a sale to anyone else needs the title in your name. The legal basis is Wis. Stat. 342.34 (no title may ever be issued for a junked vehicle) and the DMV selling page, which says a replacement title is not needed to junk a vehicle.
The paperwork for that route is Form MV2459 (Junked Vehicle Bill of Sale), signed by you and the licensed salvage dealer.
Whether an online buyer can use that route depends on the yard it sends, so say on the quote form that the title is missing and let the buyer answer.
Option 2: Order a replacement title and sell with it. Every buyer can then quote the car.
Option 3: Sell the parts yourself. A part changes hands without a title. It is slow, and it only makes sense on a car with a good engine or a part other owners are looking for.
