I want to take the guesswork out of selling your car. I analyze market data, decode DMV title laws, and test out online car buyers to give you a straight answer on whether it's worth holding out for a higher price or if you're better off taking the most convenient offer and moving on.

The bottom line: To sell a junk car in North Carolina, you need the title. You sign it as the seller in front of a notary. A bill of sale is recommended, and it needs no notary.

Without the title, a car 12 model years or older with no lien can go to a licensed salvage yard. You sign a short statement at pickup instead.

Replace a lost title with Form MVR-4 for $25.50, but expect a 15-day wait.

Your plates stay with you: turn them in or move them to another car before you cancel insurance. Then file Form MVR-46F with NCDMV to report the sale.

In North Carolina, the typical offer in our data for a junk car 10 years or older is $480.

How Do You Sell a Junk Car in North Carolina?

Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers

A quote form asks for the year, make, model and mileage, and the ZIP code where the car sits. It also asks whether the car starts.

If a buyer wants the VIN, look through the windshield at the driver’s side of the dashboard, or read it off the title.

In our offer data, nothing moves the offer more than a missing catalytic converter. So be exact about damage and missing parts, the converter above all.

When two or more buyers quote the same car on the same day through our own quote form, the highest and lowest offers are typically $314 apart. So get at least three quotes.

Step 2: Check your paperwork

Get the title and a photo ID out before you accept anything. The name on the title has to be yours, and no lender can still be listed on it.

A title that is lost, held by a lender or in someone else’s name doesn’t end the sale, but each case has its own form.

Every form you might need

A straightforward junk sale in North Carolina is signed on the title itself. These forms are for a missing title, a car that wasn’t yours, and an odometer reading that needs its own form.

Replacement title

Application: Form MVR-4

For a title that is lost or damaged. Where to apply and the wait.

Selling without a title

Seller form: none; yard maintains record approved by NCDMV; seller signs short statement at pickup, no notarization

Only for cars that meet the state’s conditions. What they are.

Inherited vehicle

Use: Form MVR-317

For a car whose owner has died. What the estate needs.

Lien release

Needed if the front of the title shows a lender.

How it comes off.

Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup

Accept the offer you want. Peddle’s tow company then contacts you within one business day to schedule the pickup, and CashForCars has one of its towing partners call you to set a time.

You meet the driver, hand over the notarized title, and take the money. If someone else will do that for you, tell the buyer when you book.

Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck

Move whatever is parked in front of the car, so the truck has a clear path to it. Tell the buyer about a gate, a slope or soft ground when you book.

Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glove box, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well. Take off any toll pass or parking permit.

Take the plates off before the car goes on the truck.

What to do with them: transfer to another vehicle you own, or surrender to NCDMV (any license plate agency or by mail) before canceling insurance

Step 5: Sign the title and take payment

The driver looks the car over and takes the title you signed at the notary.

The notary rule in North Carolina: the registered owner signs as seller on the back of the title in the presence of a notary, and where two owners are on the front both sign.

Notary fee and where: $10 per signature in person, $15 electronic, or $25 remote online, at a license plate agency, a bank, or any commissioned notary.

Ask the buyer how it wants the seller’s section completed before you sign anything. Take the buyer’s name and address from your offer confirmation, not from the driver.

Peddle, Wheelzy and CashForCars all pay at pickup, so count the cash or read the check before the driver leaves.

Title transfer: a North Carolina license plate agency or by mail to NCDMV.

Keep any paper the driver leaves with you, and your offer confirmation.

Step 6: Plates and the release form

Cancel the insurance last, after the car has gone and the notice is filed. If the pickup moves to another day, the car is still yours until then.

Keep a photo of the signed title and your payment record in one place.

Nothing moves the offer more than the catalytic converter. With the converter gone, buyers offer about 57% less than for a comparable car with it, once age and mileage are matched. If it’s missing, say so on the form.

Whether the engine starts is the next thing. Buyers offer about 46% less for a car that won’t start than for a comparable car that drives, once age and mileage are matched. Our guide to selling a non-running car goes into it.

If the car still starts and drives and has a clean title, a private sale usually pays more than a junk buyer. Our guide to selling a car privately in North Carolina covers the paperwork.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in North Carolina?

North Carolina permits one kind of sale without a title, and it’s a sale for scrap. It’s allowed when the car is 12 model years old or older, sold to a licensed salvage yard or secondary metals recycler for scrap or parts only, with no lien.

Option 1: Sell it to a licensed yard for scrap. Ask the yard whether it’s licensed before you agree on a price, and bring your photo ID on the day.

Option 2: Apply for a duplicate title before you sell. With the title in hand, every buyer can quote the car. If the car doesn’t meet the scrap conditions, this is the only way to sell it whole.

Option 3: Sell the parts one by one. A transmission or a set of rims changes hands with no title. It’s slow, and our guide to selling a car for parts explains how.

Getting a Replacement Title in North Carolina

What a replacement title takes in North Carolina:

Send the application on the day you start collecting quotes. The two don’t depend on each other, and the wait runs while the offers come in.

Bring your photo ID if you go in person. If the original turns up later, sign the replacement over and destroy the old one.

If a lender still holds the title

A lien printed on the front of the title stops every junk buyer until it’s released. How the lien comes off in North Carolina: NC lenders typically hold the paper title until loan payoff, then sign the title at closing or send a lien release letter to NCDMV. ELT (Electronic Lien & Title) used for institutional lienholders.

If the loan balance is more than the offer, you pay the difference before the lender lets the title go. Our guide to selling a financed car explains the options.

If your title is electronic

Electronic titles in North Carolina: NC uses ELT (Electronic Lien & Title) for lienholders only. Sellers need a paper title to sell.

If you paid the loan off and no paper title ever arrived, ask the lender for it first. If it doesn’t turn up, the duplicate application is the fallback, with the same wait.

If the car is titled in another state

A car parked in North Carolina with a title from another state can still be sold here. Sign it the way the issuing state’s title says, since its rules on notaries and signatures may not match North Carolina’s.

A lost out-of-state title is replaced by the state that issued it, not by the NCDMV, on that state’s form and at its fee.

Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name

Whoever is named on the title is the person the buyer pays. If that isn’t you, fix the ownership before you ask for quotes.

The owner died. North Carolina’s route to your name: Form MVR-317. With the title in your name, the sale goes on like any other.

Someone gave you the car. North Carolina’s condition for a gift transfer: Both parties must be North Carolina residents and the vehicle must carry a North Carolina title.

Someone left the car on your property and never came back. A car that was never yours isn’t yours to sign over. The abandoned vehicle process is the route, and it takes time.

Storing a Junk Car in North Carolina

Before you store the car, check your city’s and county’s rules on a junked car kept in public view.

Park it on a hard surface and keep it closed up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to sell a junk car in North Carolina?

The comparison tool returns offers within minutes, and Peddle’s pickups typically happen within 24 to 48 hours of scheduling.

A lost title adds the state’s replacement wait, and a lender on the title adds the wait for the release.

Is a bill of sale required to junk a car in North Carolina?

A bill of sale is recommended in North Carolina.

State form: Generic (no state form).

Notarized: not required.

Write one anyway, because it puts the price and the date on paper. Our bill of sale generator makes one from the title details.

Does handing the plates back release me from liability for a junk car in North Carolina?

North Carolina’s answer: no (separate MVR-46F filing required).

Does my junk car need an emissions test or safety inspection to sell in North Carolina?

Junk buyers don’t ask for test results.

Emissions test to sell: not required (buyer needs a passing test to register in 19 counties).

Safety inspection to sell: not required at sale (buyer needs annual safety inspection for registration).

Can I sell a junk car with expired registration in North Carolina?

Yes. The title proves you own the car, and the registration only says whether it may be driven, which a towed car isn’t.

What if the junk car offer changes when the driver arrives in North Carolina?

You don’t have to accept it. A price cut at or after pickup was the most common complaint sellers made about Peddle to the BBB in the year we read.

Until you hand over the title, the car is still yours, so you can send the truck away and use one of your other quotes.

What if I lost the keys to my junk car in North Carolina?

Wheelzy buys cars without keys regularly, so lost keys don’t have to stop the sale.

Should I repair the junk car or sell it in North Carolina?

Put the repair estimate next to two numbers: what buyers offer for the car now, and what it would be offered running. If the repair costs more than the gap between them, sell it as it is.

What happens to my junk car after I sell it in North Carolina?

That depends on the buyer. Wheelzy repairs the cars it can, and recycles or parts out the ones that are beyond repair.
