I want to take the guesswork out of selling your car. I analyze market data, decode DMV title laws, and test out online car buyers to give you a straight answer on whether it's worth holding out for a higher price or if you're better off taking the most convenient offer and moving on.

The bottom line: AutoNation is a large car buying service with over 300 dealerships across the country. They buy your car outright or take it as a trade in. You get an online quote in a few minutes, then visit a store for a physical inspection.

The main problem is the gap between online quotes and final offers. Reviews show prices often drop once you arrive at the dealership. Plan to spend 2 to 3.5 hours there for the appraisal and paperwork. Some sellers also report title processing taking months.

AutoNation works best for sellers who value a safe, established traditional dealership process over getting the most money. Their size means you can check multiple locations and compare offers. But in our testing, Carvana offered more for the same vehicles. Compare offers from multiple services with Sell Car Advisor before deciding.

What We Like

  • Over 300 stores across the country, so most people have one nearby
  • They’re a publicly traded company with decades in business, so payment is reliable
  • Multiple locations in most big cities let you compare offers between stores
  • They buy most types of vehicles, from economy cars to luxury brands
  • The in person model means you can try to negotiate the price
  • Many high volume locations now pay same day through electronic transfer
  • Upload photos of your car to add $50 to your quote
  • They handle cars with loans and work directly with your lender

What You Should Know

  • Reviews on Trustpilot and Google show big drops between online quotes and final in person offers
  • Expect to spend 2 to 3.5 hours at the dealership for the appraisal and paperwork
  • Title processing can drag on for months, with some sellers waiting over six months
  • Service quality and assessments vary a lot between different stores
  • Online quotes expire in just 3 days
  • Departments don’t always talk to each other, so you may repeat the same info to multiple people

How to Sell a Car to AutoNation?

1. Get Your Online Quote

Start on AutoNation’s website. The form takes 1-2 minutes. You’ll enter your VIN or license plate, then answer questions about mileage, condition, and whether you want to trade in or just sell.

Tip: Upload photos of your car when filling out the form. AutoNation adds $50 to your quote when you include pictures.

2. Schedule Your In Person Appraisal

Your online quote only lasts 3 days. Book an appointment at a nearby AutoNation store before it expires. Most locations take same day appointments.

Block out 2 to 3.5 hours for the visit. Morning appointments early in the week tend to have shorter waits.

3. Get Your Car Inspected

An appraiser will check your car from top to bottom. They look at mechanical issues, scratches, dents, and interior wear. This inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Many reviews mention this step finding problems that lower the price below the online quote. Be ready for the final number to change.

Tip: Bring competing offers from CarMax, Carvana, or local dealers. Having other quotes in hand gives you something to point to if they try to lower the price.

4. Accept Offer and Get Paid

If you accept their offer, you’ll handle the title transfer and paperwork right there. Many high volume stores now pay the same day through electronic transfer. Some locations still use company checks.

The initial sale wraps up in one afternoon. But final paperwork and title processing can stretch weeks or even months depending on your state and situation.

How Much Can You Get From AutoNation?

We requested quotes from AutoNation in January 2026 to see what they would offer. Keep in mind these are online quotes, and the final amount may change after the in person inspection.

How AutoNation Compares to CarMax and Carvana

We got quotes from AutoNation, CarMax, and Carvana for the same three vehicles in January 2026. We gave all three buyers the exact same information about each car.

Vehicle ProfileCarvana OfferAutoNation OfferCarMax Offer
2018 Tesla Model 3$14,200$12,800$11,400
2022 Ford F-150 XL$22,000$15,950$18,400
2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE$24,600$23,700$22,400

For the Tesla Model 3, Carvana offered $14,200. AutoNation came in at $12,800, which is $1,400 less. CarMax offered the least at $11,400. Carvana won this one.

The Ford F-150 showed the biggest difference. Carvana offered $22,000, CarMax offered $18,400, but AutoNation only quoted $15,950. That’s $6,050 less than Carvana and $2,450 less than CarMax. This was AutoNation’s weakest result.

The Toyota RAV4 was the closest race. Carvana offered $24,600, AutoNation offered $23,700, and CarMax offered $22,400. AutoNation landed in the middle, just $900 behind Carvana.

Carvana offered the most on all three vehicles in our test. AutoNation came in second on the Tesla and RAV4, but fell to last place on the F-150. If your goal is to make the most money, our testing shows Carvana is the better choice.

Common Questions About Selling to AutoNation

How long does the whole process take?

Plan on 2 to 3.5 hours at the dealership. The actual inspection runs about 30 to 45 minutes. The rest is waiting, talking about price, and handling paperwork.

After the sale, final paperwork can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. If you have a lien or complex title situation, add more time.

Will they honor my online quote?

The online quote is a starting point, not a guarantee. Reviews show the final offer almost always comes in lower after they inspect the car in person.

They adjust based on issues they find during inspection, plus current inventory and market conditions. Think of the online number as an estimate, not a promise.

Can I negotiate the price?

You can try. AutoNation now uses AI to price most offers, so there’s less wiggle room than at a traditional dealer. Your best bet is to bring written offers from CarMax, Carvana, or local dealers to show what others will pay.

Service records and a clean car help your case. Be ready to walk away if the number doesn’t work for you.

What paperwork do I need to bring?

Bring your title if you own the car outright, plus your current registration, driver’s license, and all sets of keys. Maintenance records, inspection reports, and repair receipts help too.

If you still have a loan, bring your most recent statement showing the payoff amount. Make sure all your documents match the info on your car exactly.

How do they pay you?

Most busy locations now pay through same day electronic transfer. Some stores still hand out company checks. The payment method can depend on how much the sale is and which location you use.

If you have a loan, AutoNation pays your lender directly and gives you whatever is left over. Large checks may be held by your bank, so ask about timing before you finish the sale.

Do they buy damaged cars?

Yes, but the offer will reflect what it costs to fix. Mechanical problems hurt your price more than dents or scratches. Each car gets looked at based on repair costs and what it would be worth after repairs.

If your car has major damage, you might get a better offer from junk car buyers instead.

What if I still owe money on my car?

AutoNation buys cars with loans. It takes longer and needs more paperwork. You’ll give them your current payoff amount and lender info.

They work directly with your lender to pay off the loan and handle the title. Expect the whole thing to take 2 to 3 weeks longer than a car you own free and clear.

Can I sell without a title?

No. You need a clear title to sell to AutoNation. If you lost yours, get a replacement from your state DMV first.

If your lender holds the title because you have a loan, AutoNation can work with them directly. In rare cases they might start the process while you wait for a title, but they won’t finish until they have it in hand.

Do they handle all the DMV stuff?

They handle most of it, but it takes time. They do title transfers, cancel your registration, and file the required documents. Processing runs weeks to months depending on your state. Some sellers have waited up to six months.

You still need to do some things yourself, like returning your plates to the DMV, submitting a release of liability form if your state has one, and canceling your insurance after the sale goes through.

What matters most for the final price?

Mechanical problems, body damage, interior wear, and accident history all affect your offer. How much demand there is for your specific car in your area matters too, along with what’s already on the lot at your local store.

Mileage, age, and service history count. Even the time of year can make a difference. Convertibles get better offers in spring and summer.

Should I make an appointment?

Yes. Walk ins wait much longer, especially on weekends and evenings. Appointments get priority treatment and shorter wait times.

Try to book a morning slot early in the week. This gives you the most flexibility if you want to visit multiple AutoNation locations to compare offers.

How long is my quote good for?

AutoNation says 7 days or 500 miles. But when we tested it, our quotes expired after just 3 days. Don’t wait too long to schedule your appointment.

Do they buy modified cars?

Yes, but mods usually lower your offer instead of raising it. Simple stuff like aftermarket wheels or a new stereo won’t hurt you much. Big changes to the engine or body cut deeper into your price.

If your car is heavily modified, you’ll probably get more money selling it privately to someone who wants those upgrades.

Is AutoNation legitimate?

Yes. AutoNation is a publicly traded company that’s been around for decades. They have over 300 stores across the country and buy thousands of cars every year. You won’t get scammed out of your car or payment.

The complaints you see online are mostly about the gap between online quotes and final offers, not about the company being fake or unsafe.
