I want to take the guesswork out of selling your car. I analyze market data, decode DMV title laws, and test out online car buyers to give you a straight answer on whether it's worth holding out for a higher price or if you're better off taking the most convenient offer and moving on.

The bottom line: CarGurus offers two selling paths. You can sell 100% online with free home pickup, or visit a local dealer for same day payment.

TrueCar works differently. It sends your info to dealers who contact you with offers. The online estimate you see is not binding.

We tested both with 6 vehicles across 2025 and 2026. CarGurus offered more on all 5 vehicles where both gave quotes. The gaps ranged from $2,250 to $5,253. TrueCar’s only advantage came when CarGurus refused to make an offer at all.

Neither service works well for junk cars, salvage titles, or high mileage beaters. Both focus on newer vehicles in decent shape.

CarGurus vs. TrueCar: Detailed Comparison

CarGurus quotes stay good for 7 calendar days or 250 additional miles. TrueCar estimates expire in just 3 calendar days. This matters if you need time to compare your selling options or sort out paperwork.

CarGurus offers two ways to sell. You can pick a local dealer and get paid the same day, or choose their online option and get free home pickup within a few days. TrueCar requires dealership visits for every sale. You share your info, dealers call you, and then you drive to their lot for an inspection.

The offers show clear differences. On the 2022 Ford F-150, CarGurus offered $5,200 more than TrueCar. The 2021 RAV4 Prime had a $2,275 gap. In 2025, the Jeep Grand Cherokee showed a $5,253 difference. These gaps add up fast when you are selling a newer vehicle.

Sellers on Trustpilot report different experiences with each service. CarGurus users mention that dealer offers sometimes drop after inspection, especially for paint chips or worn tires. TrueCar reviews frequently mention aggressive sales tactics, with dealers pushing hard for trade-ins and new car purchases instead of cash offers.

Both services struggle with older cars or those with problems. CarGurus gave no offer on the 2018 Tesla Model 3 in our 2026 tests. TrueCar at least provided an estimate, though sellers who just want cash often feel pressure to buy something new.

Where to Sell Your Car?

CarGurus wins for most sellers. They offered more money in all 5 head-to-head tests. The home pickup option saves you from dealership visits, and quotes last twice as long as TrueCar estimates.

TrueCar can make sense if CarGurus rejects your car. In our tests, the Tesla Model 3 got no CarGurus offer but TrueCar at least gave an estimate. If you are trading in while buying a new car, TrueCar’s dealer network might be convenient.

Neither service works for junk cars, salvage titles, or high mileage vehicles. For those, check how to sell a junk car for better options.
