I want to take the guesswork out of selling your car. I analyze market data, decode DMV title laws, and test out online car buyers to give you a straight answer on whether it's worth holding out for a higher price or if you're better off taking the most convenient offer and moving on.

The bottom line: Driveway buys used cars online and picks them up from your home. They focus on newer cars with clean titles and usually pay more than dealerships. The whole sale happens without visiting a dealer or meeting strangers.

Their offers stay the same as long as your car matches what you told them. Payment goes straight to your bank account right when they pick up the car. The downside is that it takes one to three weeks from start to finish, which is slower than they advertise.

Some sellers have trouble with their document system losing paperwork. Pickup times can also get moved around at the last minute. But if you don’t need cash right away and want a simple process, Driveway is a solid choice. Compare offers from multiple services with Sell Car Advisor before deciding.

What We Like

  • Offers usually beat what local dealerships will pay, especially for newer cars
  • Most sellers get their original quoted price with no surprise cuts at pickup
  • Money hits your bank account within 30 minutes of approving the sale
  • You never have to leave your house or visit a dealership
  • They don’t dock your price for small scratches or normal wear
  • The quote form takes about 3 minutes and gives you a price right away
  • You get 7 days to think about the offer with no pressure calls
  • Free pickup anywhere in the country
  • They handle cars with loans and pay off your lender directly
  • Reps help with tricky situations like joint titles or out of state sales
  • Now works with Amazon Autos if you want to trade in while buying a new car

What You Should Know

  • The process may take 1 to 3 weeks even though they make it sound faster in their ads
  • Their document system sometimes loses your paperwork and you have to send it again
  • Pickup times can get delayed or cancelled at the last minute
  • You might talk to different reps during the process instead of one person
  • They won’t buy cars older than 20 years or with more than 180,000 miles
  • They pass on cars with major damage history or title problems
  • Offers are similar to Carvana, so check both before you decide

2. Accept the Offer

You have 7 days to decide. Nobody calls you every hour trying to push you into it.

Say yes, and they lock in that price. But here’s the catch: they’ll change it if your car doesn’t match what you told them. Be honest when you fill out the form and you won’t have problems.

3. Send Your Documents

Now you upload your title and ID. Pay attention here because their system can be glitchy.

Keep copies of everything you send. Some people had to submit the same documents twice because the system lost them.

Tip: Take screenshots after you upload each document. If something goes wrong, you’ll have proof you sent it.

4. Schedule Pickup

Once your documents get approved, you pick a time for them to get your car.

They use outside haulers to collect vehicles. Keep your schedule a bit flexible because some people have had their times moved around.

5. Get Paid

The driver shows up and looks over your car. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. They just check that it matches what you described.

If everything looks good, the money goes straight to your bank account. Most people get paid before the driver even leaves.

How Much Can You Get?

Driveway usually pays more than what dealers offer. They’re best for newer cars that are in decent shape.

You won’t get as much as selling to a private buyer. But you also skip the strangers coming to your house, the lowball texts, and the endless back and forth. For many people, that trade off is worth it.

How Driveway Compares to Other Buyers

We got quotes from Driveway, Carvana, and CarMax in January 2026. We used three different vehicles, all with clean titles and the same miles.

Vehicle ProfileDriveway OfferCarvana OfferCarMax Offer
2018 Tesla Model 3 (73k miles)$11,000$14,200$11,400
2022 Ford F-150 XL$23,450$22,000$18,400
2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE$25,650$24,600$22,400

For the Tesla, Carvana offered the most at $14,200. Driveway offered $11,000 and CarMax came in at $11,400. That’s a $3,200 gap between Carvana and Driveway on the electric car.

For the F-150, Driveway came in at $23,450. Carvana offered $22,000, which is $1,450 less. CarMax trailed at $18,400. For the RAV4, Driveway also won at $25,650. Carvana offered $24,600 and CarMax offered $22,400.

CarMax came in last on all three. The speed is different too. Carvana finishes most sales in 2 to 3 days while Driveway takes 1 to 3 weeks. Driveway picks up free everywhere, but Carvana charges for pickup in some areas.

Get quotes from both. If you’re selling an electric car, Carvana probably pays more. For trucks and SUVs, Driveway usually beats them. Just know you’ll wait longer with Driveway.

Common Questions About Selling to Driveway

How long does the whole process take?

Most sales take 1 to 3 weeks. If you have a clean title and no loan, you’re usually on the faster end.

Trickier situations like liens or title problems can add time. Sometimes it stretches to a month. The delays usually come from document processing and pickup scheduling, not the quote itself.

How does Driveway pay you?

They use instant bank transfers now. The money shows up in your account right away.

Most sellers say they get paid before the driver leaves their house. They also offer regular bank transfers if you prefer that, but those take 3 to 5 days.

Do I need to clean my car first?

Nope. They take it however it is.

Just grab your stuff from the door pockets, under the seats, and the trunk. Take your plates off. That’s all you need to do.

Can I sell a car I’m still paying off?

Yes. You’ll need your loan account info and how much you still owe.

Driveway pays off your lender first, then sends you the difference. Expect it to take about a week longer than selling a car you own outright.

What documents do I need?

You need your title and a government ID. If you still have a loan, you’ll need that account info too. Power of attorney papers if someone else is handling the sale for you.

Save copies of everything. Some people had to submit the same documents more than once because the system glitched.

Will they actually pay the quoted price?

Usually, yes. Reviews show most sellers get exactly what they were quoted.

They only change the price if your car doesn’t match what you told them. Hidden accidents, big mechanical issues, or serious body damage will lower your offer. Small scratches and normal wear won’t.

The key is being honest when you fill out the form. If you describe your car accurately, you shouldn’t have any surprises at pickup.

What happens at pickup?

They send a driver from a hauling company in your area. You pick a time that works for you.

The driver checks your car for 10 to 15 minutes to make sure it matches your description. If everything looks good, they process your payment and load up the car. Done.

Can I change my mind after accepting?

Yes, as long as you haven’t signed over the title and taken the money. No fees for backing out.

Just call your rep and tell them you changed your mind. They’ll cancel the pickup.

What if the driver never shows up?

Call your rep right away. They’ll reschedule and might give you a gas card or something for the trouble.

Some sellers have had pickup delays. But reviews also show the company tries to make it right once they know about the problem.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. Your state might need emissions testing or inspection certificates. That costs money, but that’s your state, not Driveway. Ask your rep about what your state requires.

How do they check my car’s condition?

First, they use AI to look at your photos. This helps cut down on price surprises at pickup.

The real check happens when the driver shows up. They look for big issues, not tiny scratches. They check that everything runs, the body looks right, and all the features work.

Can I sell without a title?

No. You have to have the title.

Lost it? Go to your DMV and get a replacement first. Some states can rush it. Driveway might tell you how to speed things up, but you can’t sell until you have that piece of paper.

What if my car doesn’t match what I said?

Small stuff means small price cuts. A scratch you forgot about might cost you a few hundred bucks.

Big stuff is a different story. If you hid major damage or problems, they might cancel or drop the price a lot. Just tell the truth when you fill out the form and you’ll avoid headaches.

What happens after I say yes to the offer?

You start uploading your documents and pick a pickup time. Stay in touch with your rep.

You’ll get emails confirming your documents and schedule. You can also check where things stand through their website anytime.

Is Driveway legitimate?

Yes. They’re owned by Lithia Motors, which is one of the biggest dealership groups in the country. They’ve been around for years and buy thousands of cars.

The BBB rating looks bad, but most of those complaints come from people buying cars, not selling. Sellers generally have a good experience.

Driveway matches Carvana on offer amounts and leads the category on payment speed, sending money to your bank within 30 minutes of pickup. Process ease is where it scores lower, as the full sale takes 1 to 3 weeks from start to finish, which is much slower than it sounds in their ads.
