How Do You Sell a Junk Car in Connecticut?
Six steps, in the order they happen. The tow company sets the pickup day; the paperwork is the part you control.
1. Get quotes from several buyers
Each quote form asks for the year, make, model, mileage and ZIP code, then whether the car starts, whether it rolls, and what is missing. Some forms take the VIN in place of the year and model.
The VIN is on the driver’s side of the dashboard, read through the windshield, and on the sticker in the driver’s door frame. It is also printed on the title and the registration.
An offer comes back in minutes. Say on the form what is broken or missing, because the driver checks the car against your answers, and a difference lowers the price.
2. Check your paperwork
You need proof that the car is yours and a photo ID that matches the name on it.

3. Accept an offer and book the pickup
After you accept, the buyer passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company contacts you to set a day. You are given a window on that day rather than a set time.
Plan to be there. The driver checks the car, takes the title and pays you there. A pickup with nobody present is rescheduled.
4. Get the car ready for the tow truck
Move anything parked in front of the car. Tell the tow company when you book about a gate, a slope or soft ground on the way to it.
Take everything out: the glove box, the trunk, the door pockets and under the seats. Remove a toll tag or parking permit from the windshield.
Plates stay with you. Take them off before the truck arrives. Say on the quote form if the keys are missing.
5. Sign the title and take payment
You sign the seller’s section of the title, with your name written the way it is printed on the front.
Fill in the buyer’s name and address from your offer confirmation, not the tow company’s, unless the buyer has told you otherwise. The driver usually works for a contracted tow company rather than for the buyer.
The driver pays you first and loads the car after.
Keep whatever the driver hands you, and check your email, since some buyers send the bill of sale and the confirmation that way.
Title transfer: a DMV hub or branch office, by appointment.
6. Close the sale with the DMV
- Plates: transfer your plates to another vehicle you own, or cancel your registration and return them to the DMV.
- Plate transfer fee: $21.
- Deadline: no deadline is published; the DMV lists the cancellation right after removing the plates.
If you skip it: the vehicle remains assessed for local property tax until registration is canceled with the DMV.
Cancel the insurance after the car has been collected, not before, in case the pickup date moves. Keep the signed bill of sale and the payment record together as your proof of the sale date.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Connecticut?
Yes, in the cases the state lists: the vehicle is older than 20 model years (no title required), or the original Connecticut title is lost and the vehicle is titled in the seller's name and the buyer will register the vehicle in Connecticut. The statute is Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-166.
Option 1: The state’s own route. The paperwork is Form Q-1 (Supplemental Assignment of Ownership), plus Form H-6B if the title is lost on a vehicle 20 model years old or newer. One more point from the DMV: for a vehicle older than 20 model years the previous owner's registration certificate is the proof of ownership, with Form Q-1 and/or the bill of sale.
Read the conditions against your buyer. A junk buyer dismantles or auctions the car, so ask it which of these papers it accepts before you rely on this route.
Option 2: Order a replacement title first. Every buyer will then quote you, and you sign the new title over at pickup like any other.

If a lender still holds your title
A junk buyer will not take a title that shows an open lien. It is cleared like this: the lender provides a lien release letter on official letterhead, which goes to the buyer; if the loan is more than ten years old, section 2 of Form H-6B stating the lien is satisfied stands in for it

If your title is electronic
Connecticut does not participate in any electronic title or electronic lienholder programs
A paper title is what the driver takes at pickup. If a lender in another state held your title electronically, ask that lender for the paper copy before you book a pickup.
If your car is titled in another state
A car parked in Connecticut with a title from another state can be sold to any buyer on this page. Sign that title the way its own state instructs, because the signing rules go with the title, not with where the car is parked.
If that title is missing, the replacement comes from the state that issued it. Its form, fee and wait apply, not Connecticut’s.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
The buyer pays whoever is named on the title. If that is not you, the paperwork comes first, and no pickup happens until it is done.
The owner died. Connecticut’s form is Form H-13B (Application for Registration and Title), and the estate’s representative signs the title over. Once the car is in your name, the junk sale runs the same as any other.
Someone gave you the car. The state’s gift process: The donor signs the gift declaration. For a family transfer the vehicle must have been registered in that family member's name for at least 60 days and taxed on the last sale.
Abandoned on your property. A car that was never yours cannot be signed over by you. The only way is the abandoned vehicle process, which takes time.
