Step 2: Check your paperwork
Two things cover most Georgia junk sales: the title and a photo ID that matches the name printed on it.
Title required to sell: Yes (for most cars; model year 1985 and older exempt)
An expired tag doesn’t stop anything. Georgia buyers care about who owns the car, not whether the registration is current, so a car that has sat for three years is still a normal sale.
A bill of sale is recommended. Georgia publishes one as Form T-7, and it’s available for free download from the Georgia Department of Revenue website. Ours fills in the same fields if you’d rather do it in a browser.
Odometer disclosure: required for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, with model year 2010 and older, trailers, and vehicles over 16,000 lbs GVWR exempt
That exempts nearly every junk car on the road. If yours does need it, the mileage line on the back of the title handles it and you don’t need a second form.
If the title is missing, damaged, or in the wrong name, don’t cancel the sale. Get a quote first and sort the paperwork while the offer is still good.

Most junk sales need no forms at all. These come up when something is missing or the car isn’t straightforwardly yours.
Selling without a title
Form: Form MV-1SP
Only for older, low value cars going to a licensed yard. Who qualifies.
Inherited vehicle
Form: Form T-20 (Affidavit of Inheritance) or Letters of Testamentary/Administration if probated

Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
You accept online, then a dispatcher calls you, usually within a couple of hours. That call sets the day and a pickup window.
Expect a four hour window rather than a set time, since drivers batch several stops along one route. Same-day pickup happens around Atlanta, Savannah, and Augusta. Rural counties usually run a day behind.
Tell the dispatcher where the car actually sits. A car behind a fence, on a slope, or in an apartment deck needs a different truck than one at the curb.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
Lost keys are not a problem. The truck winches the car on with the wheels locked, so no driver expects a junk car to start.
Clear a straight path to the car and move anything parked in front of it. A flatbed needs roughly 40 feet of room and can’t work around a tight turn.
Empty it properly. Check the glovebox, the trunk, under the seats, and the sun visor, since people leave garage remotes and registration paperwork behind constantly.
Leave the parts on. Pulling the battery, the stereo, or the catalytic converter after you got the quote lowers the offer, because the buyer priced the car with them fitted.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
Notarization is not required in Georgia, so nothing has to happen before the driver arrives.
Sign in blue or black ink, exactly as your name appears on the title. No notary required.
Sign it once the driver is there and the money is out, not the night before. A signed title sitting in a drawer is a title anybody can use.

Payment is usually cash or check. It depends on the tow company.
You won’t be visiting a government office for any of this. Georgia handles title transfers at the County Tag Office, and that trip belongs to the buyer.
Step 6: Close it out
What to do with your plate: transfer to new vehicle, or cancel online via DRIVES / return to tag office
Sort that out before the truck arrives rather than after, since a plate is much easier to reach on a car still sitting on the ground. Moving it to another car costs $20.
Handing the plate in is not the same as being done, and this is where Georgia trips people up.

So treat the cancellation as its own step. The form is Form MV-18J (Registration Cancellation).
When to file: Immediately
Until that lands, the state still shows the car as registered to you. Tickets and tolls follow the registration, not the signature on the title.
Cancel the insurance last, after the truck has left. Doing it the day before means an uninsured car sitting on your property, which is the one gap that can cost you.
Keep the bill of sale and a photo of the signed title for a year. Two minutes now settles any question about what happened after the sale.

What Your Junk Car Is Worth in Georgia
Most junk cars are offered $200 to $750. Trucks and full size SUVs often land between $700 and $1,500, and a late model car with crash damage can go higher still.

Weight beats condition. A wrecked SUV usually beats a tidy compact that simply won’t start. Whether the engine turns over matters less than most people expect, which is why non-running cars still draw solid offers.
Trucks hold value at any age. Pickups keep drawing offers long after a sedan of the same year has bottomed out, because the parts demand never really drops.
Where the car sits changes the number. Offers inside the Atlanta ring tend to run higher than in the far south of the state, since more yards are competing for the same car.
Flood and fire damage pull offers down hard. Water ruins the wiring and the interior, which strips out most of the parts value and leaves you close to scrap weight alone.
Missing wheels or a missing engine cost more than you’d think. The car gets harder to load and thinner on parts, so both show up in the offer.

Selling a Junk Car Without a Title in Georgia
Georgia gives you three ways forward, and which one applies comes down to how old the car is and what it’s worth.
- Sign the scrap statement. The form is Form MV-1SP, and you sign it in place of a title.
- Check the age exemption. Georgia has never titled the oldest cars on the road, and those move on a bill of sale and the old registration instead.
- Apply for a replacement. Anything newer or worth more than the scrap threshold needs a real title.

That last part is the catch nobody mentions. It rules out handing the car to a neighbor, a private buyer, or anyone who isn’t a licensed used parts dealer or scrap metal processor.
In practice that suits online buyers fine. They route your car to a licensed Georgia yard, and the yard files the cancellation with the state rather than leaving it to you.
The trade is permanent. Once the state cancels that title the car can never be titled again, so this path is only for a car heading to be dismantled or crushed.
Tell the buyer up front that you have no title. Whether they can use this route depends on the yard they send, and it’s a two minute question at quote time rather than an argument in your driveway.
None of this covers a car that was never yours. A vehicle left on your property follows the abandoned vehicle process instead, which runs through the courts and takes weeks.

Getting a Replacement Title in Georgia
A replacement takes 7 to 10 business days and costs less than the gap between two quotes, so it’s worth doing for almost any car.
The application is Form MV-1, the same form Georgia uses for titles and tags generally.

If a lender still holds the title
On a junk car the offer rarely covers what’s left on the loan, so most people clear the balance first and then sell. Call the lender and ask for the payoff figure before you accept anything.
Once it’s cleared, ask for the lien release in writing. Buyers want to see it alongside the title, and a financed car without one stalls at the curb.
If your title is electronic
Georgia does run an electronic title system, but not for sellers.

So if you paid a car off recently and no paper title ever showed up, that’s your answer. Ask the lender to release it, then request the paper copy from your county tag office.
Nothing about that changes your quote. Get the numbers while you wait on the paper.
If the car is titled in another state
An out-of-state title is fine. You sign it over the same way, and the buyer sorts out the paperwork on their end.

Georgia wants the title in your name before you sell, whatever the car is worth. There’s no shortcut for junk cars here.

Which form you use depends on whether the estate went to probate.
