How Do You Sell a Junk Car in New Mexico?
Six steps, in the order they happen.
Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers
A quote form wants the year, make and model, the mileage, your ZIP code, and whether the car starts. Some forms also ask for the VIN, which is on the plate at the bottom of the windshield and on the registration card.
Say on the form if the wheels, the engine or the catalytic converter are gone. The offer is made on what you type, and the driver looks for the same things.
Get at least three quotes. None of them commits you to anything, and these are the three to start with.

Step 2: Check your paperwork
Get the title and a photo ID out before you accept anything. The name on the title has to be yours, and no lender can still be listed on it.
Odometer reading on the title: required for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, with model year 2010 and older, trailers, and vehicles over 16,000 lbs GVWR exempt.

Every form you might need
With the title in hand, the only one of these you fill in is the notice, and that comes after the pickup. The other two are for a lost title and for the odometer reading.
Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
Accept online or by phone. The buyer passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company calls to set a pickup window.
You meet the driver, sign the title, and take the money. If someone else will do that for you, tell the buyer when you book.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
The truck needs a straight run at the car and space behind it for the bed. If the car is behind a locked gate or boxed in by another car, say so when you book.
Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glovebox, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well.
Plates stay with the seller. Take them off before the truck arrives.
Lost keys do not stop the pickup, because the driver winches the car on. Say so on the quote form. Our guide to selling a car with lost keys covers the rest.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The driver looks the car over and you sign the back of the title. Payment is usually cash or check. It depends on the tow company.
You are paid before the car goes on the truck, so count the cash or read the check before it moves.
Where the buyer transfers the title: an MVD field office or authorized partner office.
Keep any paper the driver leaves with you, and check your inbox, because some buyers email the bill of sale and the confirmation instead. The notice you file after the sale asks for the buyer’s name and address. Use the company’s, as printed on your offer confirmation, not the driver’s.
Step 6: File the notice and deal with the plates
Cost to move them to another car: varies by vehicle class and registration period.
How to tell the state: File the Notice of Vehicle Sold online, or submit Form MVD-10048 by mail or in person at any MVD field office, within 30 days of the sale.
If you skip it: you may remain liable for tickets, violations, or other issues the new owner creates after the sale.
The buyer’s paperwork does not do this for you. Keep the filing confirmation, because it shows the date the car stopped being yours.
Cancel the insurance last, after the car has gone and the notice is filed. If the pickup moves to another day, the car is still yours until it goes.

In New Mexico, a typical junk car is offered $508 (cars 10 years and older, 64 offers, ranked 26 of 44 states). Across the country, half of all offers on old cars fall between $380 and $1,080.

Do You Need a Smog Check to Junk a Car in New Mexico?
Junk buyers do not ask for test results.
Exemption for a car sold for scrap: no exemption names a junk or salvage sale; 20.11.100.2 NMAC exempts vehicles not regularly operated on public streets and highways, on proof to the program manager, and vehicles 35 years old or older.
The ordinary rule for a car sold to another driver: Emissions testing applies only in Bernalillo County, where vehicles up to 10,000 pounds must pass a test biennially and at change of ownership; the rest of New Mexico has no emissions requirement.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in New Mexico?
No. New Mexico’s rule: a replacement title must be obtained before sale, since there is no provision to sell a normal vehicle without a title, and a nonrepairable vehicle may only be conveyed to a licensed wrecker or recycler.
Option 1: Order a replacement title and sell with it. Every buyer can then quote the car. Get the quotes while the new title is in the mail, and book the pickup once it arrives.
Option 2: Sell the parts yourself. A single part changes hands without any title. Our guide to selling a car for parts covers it.
That takes weeks, and the shell is left over at the end.
Tell the buyer on the form that the title is on order. It will say then whether the offer can wait for it.

Getting a Replacement Title in New Mexico
What a replacement title takes in New Mexico:

Ask for quotes on the day you apply, because a quote does not need the title in hand. Only the pickup waits for the new title.
If the old title turns up later, destroy it. Sign over the replacement, not the old one.
If a lender still holds the title
Your lender releases it one of these ways: the lienholder provides a Release of Lien (Form MVD-10041) or a notarized letter on company letterhead with the VIN, year, make, and owner name.
The lien has to be cleared before any buyer takes the car. When the loan balance is higher than the offer, the gap comes out of your pocket, and the payoff itself is covered in our guide to selling a financed car.
If your title is electronic
New Mexico issues electronic titles through the MVD eTapestry system, and all titles are now mailed from the MVD central office rather than printed at a field office. The driver takes the paper title away with the car, so book the pickup for after it has arrived in the mail.
If the car is titled in another state
The buyer works from whichever state’s title you hold, so a car titled elsewhere can be junked in New Mexico. Write the issuing state on the quote form.
A replacement for a lost out-of-state title comes from the state that issued it, on that state’s form and fee. New Mexico does not print one for a car it never titled.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
The buyer pays whoever is named on the title. When the owner has died, the form that moves the title to you is Certificate of Transfer Without Probate (Form MVD-10011) or Affidavit of Claiming Successor (Form MVD-10013). Once the title is in your name, the junk sale is the same as any other.
New Mexico’s rule on a gifted car: Both the donor and the recipient sign and both signatures are notarized. Without the affidavit the transfer is taxed as a sale on the higher of price or reasonable value.
Gift form: MVD-10018, Affidavit of Gift of Motor Vehicle or Boat, notarized.

Selling to a local yard
A yard’s number is mostly the weight of the car at that week’s metal price. It is given over the phone, and nothing is written down until you are there.
If you have a trailer, taking the car in yourself saves the yard a tow. If the yard collects it, ask whether the tow comes off the offer.
Before anything is signed, ask what license the yard holds.
Selling to an online buyer
The number from an online buyer is in writing before any truck is booked, and three of them can be lined up in an afternoon. The price allows for what can be taken off the car and sold again, not only what the shell weighs.
The truck that turns up belongs to a local tow company. The price, though, was agreed before it set out.
The buyer pays for the tow, however far out the car is parked.

A mechanic or a hobbyist may want a car with a good engine for its parts. Plan on weeks rather than days, and on a buyer who brings a trailer.
