The bottom line: CarMax is the largest used car retailer in the US with 250+ stores. But biggest doesn’t mean best offers.
We tested six CarMax alternatives with three vehicles in 2026. CarMax offered the least on the F-150 and RAV4, and second to last on the Tesla Model 3. For the Tesla, Carvana offered $14,200 while CarMax offered $11,400. That’s $2,800 more in your pocket.
Driveway offered the most on the F-150 and RAV4 at $23,450 and $25,650. CarMax trailed by $5,050 on the F-150 alone.
Some alternatives pick up your car for free. Others specialize in older or damaged vehicles.

1. Carvana (Best for Convenience)
Carvana lets you sell your car completely online with home pickup. You get a quote in about two minutes and the whole sale takes around 20 minutes once the driver shows up.
They work best for newer vehicles under five years old with lower miles. You skip the dealer negotiation, strangers showing up for test drives, and all that back and forth.
Watch out for pickup fees that can run up to $600 depending on where you live. Dropping off at a vending machine is always free if there’s one near you.
Similarities with CarMax
- Free, no-obligation car quotes
- They handle all paperwork and title transfers for you
- Buy cars with existing loans and pay off lenders directly
Differences from CarMax
- Completely online process with no mandatory in-person visit
- Free home pickup service available in most locations

2. Driveway (Best for Newer Cars)
Driveway buys used cars online and picks them up from your home. They focus on newer cars with clean titles and usually pay more than dealerships.
Their offers stay the same as long as your car matches what you told them. Payment goes straight to your bank account within 30 minutes of approving the sale.
The downside is timing. It can take one to three weeks from start to finish, which is slower than they advertise. Some sellers have trouble with their document system losing paperwork.
Similarities with CarMax
- Online quotes take just a few minutes
- They handle all paperwork and title transfers
- Buy cars with loans and pay off lenders directly
Differences from CarMax
- Free pickup anywhere in the country, no need to drive to a store
- Payment goes directly to your bank account, not by check
- Seven days to think about the offer with no pressure calls
- They don’t dock your price for small scratches or normal wear

3. CarGurus (Best for Price Comparison)
CarGurus connects you with dealers who want to buy your car. You can sell completely online with home pickup or drive to a local dealership for same day payment.
The platform pulls offers from thousands of dealers across the country. You usually see two offers at once: one from CarGurus and one from a local dealer.
The biggest catch is that dealer quotes are recommendations, not guarantees. Many sellers report receiving lower offers once they arrive at the dealership. Older cars, high mileage vehicles, and cars with accidents often get no offers at all.
Similarities with CarMax
- Simple online quote process that takes just minutes
- No-pressure environment where you can walk away anytime
- Professional handling of paperwork and documentation
Differences from CarMax
- Connects you with multiple dealers for competitive offers
- Free home pickup when you sell through their online option
- Offers for popular trucks and SUVs often beat CarMax

4. Peddle (Best for Problem Vehicles)
Peddle buys cars in any condition. This includes vehicles that have been in an accident, have a blown engine, or are simply junk. They work nationwide and typically pick up for free within 48 hours.
They’re best for sellers who have vehicles that might scare away other buyers, like cars with salvage titles or mechanical issues. If your car runs well and has no major damage, you’ll likely get more money through Carvana or a private sale.
Offers can change at pickup if the driver finds the car was not described accurately. Be honest about your car’s condition to avoid surprises.
Similarities with CarMax
- Free online quotes with no obligation to sell
- They handle all paperwork and title transfers
- Same-day payment when you accept their offer
Differences from CarMax
- Buys older, damaged, or non-running vehicles
- Free vehicle pickup from your location, even for cars that won’t start
- Payment is usually cash or check at pickup
- Better offers for cars in poor condition compared to traditional dealers
Get an instant offer and free towing for your car, even if it doesn’t run.

5. Algo (Best for Personalized Service)
Algo lets you sell your car without leaving your home. They do everything remotely, from a quick video call to check your car’s condition to free pickup at your door.
The whole thing usually takes 3 to 5 business days. You’ll get a company check from PNC Bank when they pick up your car. There’s a $125 fee taken from your payment, plus another $25 if you have a loan or lease.
One thing that makes people nervous is that you have to mail your title before they schedule pickup. Their online quotes are estimates that can change after inspection.
Similarities with CarMax
- Straightforward selling process without trade-in requirements
- They handle all title and loan payoff paperwork
- Same-day payment is available
Differences from CarMax
- Virtual inspection via video call, no physical location visit required
- Works in all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii
- More personalized service with dedicated representatives
- $125 admin fee deducted from final offer amount
6. Driveo (Best for Local Service)
Driveo aims to pay more than traditional dealerships and big names like CarMax or Carvana. In our tests, they offered the second-highest amount on all three vehicles.
You have to drive to one of their 20 locations for an inspection, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes. They don’t come to you like other services do. Your quote stays good for 30 days, and you get bonus cash if you sell within 10 days.
After you sell, they give you a free Uber or Lyft ride home. The main limitation is their locations are mostly in Texas and California.
Similarities with CarMax
- No-pressure environment with transparent pricing
- They handle all DMV paperwork and title transfers
- No smog test or repairs required before selling
Differences from CarMax
- Only 20 locations, mostly in Texas and California
- Often beats CarMax and other competitors on price
- Provides free rides home after completing the sale
- Bonus cash if you sell within 10 days of getting your quote

7. WeBuyAnyCar (Best for Fast, In-Person Transactions)
WeBuyAnyCar USA buys vehicles quickly at their branches or at your home. You can finish the entire sale in under an hour and leave with a check the same day. They take most cars, trucks, and SUVs regardless of condition.
The trade-off is money. Their offers tend to run lower than Carvana or private buyers. The online quote you see first may drop after they inspect your car in person.
This service works best when you need to sell fast and don’t want to deal with strangers showing up to test drive your car.
Similarities with CarMax
- Free online valuation with no obligation to sell
- Professional inspection process at their locations
- Same-day payment options available
Differences from CarMax
- Typically completes transactions in under an hour
- Over 140 branch locations across the country

Why Look for Alternatives to CarMax?
Potential Drawbacks of CarMax
Online vs. In-Person Quote Gap: CarMax’s online quotes can be much higher than what they offer in person. The inspection catches things the online form misses, which often leads to a lower final price.
Payment by Check Only: CarMax only pays by check, which your bank may hold for 5 to 10 business days. If you need cash fast, this could be a problem.
Lower Offers in Our Tests: In our 2026 comparison, CarMax offered less than Carvana on all three vehicles we tested. The gap ranged from $2,200 to $3,600 per vehicle.
Long Wait Times: Busy stores can have wait times up to 4 hours. Morning appointments tend to move faster.
Benefits of Shopping Around
Better Prices: Different companies use different valuation methods. In our tests, the spread between highest and lowest offers ranged from $2,800 to $5,050 per vehicle.
Home Pickup Options: Services like Carvana, Driveway, and Peddle offer free home pickup so you don’t have to drive anywhere.
Specialized Services: Peddle handles problem cars that other buyers reject. Driveo often pays more for trucks and SUVs. Knowing which service fits your car type can mean more money in your pocket.
Different Payment Methods: Some services offer direct bank deposits or cash payments, which gets you your money faster than waiting for a check to clear.
