How Does Selling Your Car Through Edmunds Work?

You enter your car’s VIN, license plate, or year, make and model, then its trim, options, mileage and condition. Edmunds shows its True Market Value® estimate and, if the car qualifies, an instant cash offer. You don’t need photos or a phone number to get the offer.

The offer comes from CarMax or another partner dealer, and it holds for 7 days. You book a visit and bring the car with its title (unless your lender holds it), the registration, a photo ID for every owner on the title, and all keys and remotes. The dealer checks the car against what you entered, so a difference in its condition, use or history changes the offer; if it matches, you leave with payment in hand.

Questions about the offer, a loan payoff or getting the car to the store go to CarMax, not Edmunds.

If no offer appears, the car didn’t pass CarMax’s online checks, which include a vehicle history check. CarMax then needs to see it in person, so you book an appraisal at a CarMax store or drive the car in.

To sell to a private buyer instead, you list the car on Edmunds with its VIN, your ZIP code and at least one photo of the car. Payment and paperwork for the sale go through Caramel.

How Accurate Is Edmunds’ Trade-In Value?

Edmunds’ trade-in value is an estimate, not a promise: a dealer can offer more or less, and the market moves from day to day. It’s built from what similar cars sell for in your area, using dealer sales data from about a quarter of US dealerships along with other sources.

How close it comes depends mostly on what you enter. Pick the exact trim and options, and be strict about condition: Edmunds rates only about 5% of used cars outstanding, and most are clean, average or rough. Entering the VIN or plate instead of the year, make and model also gets a more accurate value.

The report shows three values. The trade-in value is typically the lowest, because a dealer has to pay for reconditioning and still make a profit, and the private-party value is what you can aim for if you sell the car yourself. Edmunds is owned by CarMax. CarMax’s sales are one of the inputs to its values, but CarMax takes no part in how Edmunds computes them.
