Without the title, a car from model year 2010 or older, last titled in Nevada and free of liens, can still be sold. You and the buyer complete Form VP 012 and a bill of sale at the DMV.

How Do You Sell a Junk Car in Nevada?
Six steps, in the order they happen.
Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers
The quote form asks for the year, make, model and mileage, your ZIP code, and whether the car starts. Most forms also ask what is wrong with it.
Some buyers want the VIN. It is stamped on a plate at the bottom of the windshield on the driver’s side, and it is printed on the registration card and on the insurance card.
Say whether the catalytic converter is still on the car and whether it rolls. The offer covers the car as you described it, so describe it as it is.
Get at least three quotes. None of them commits you to anything.
Step 2: Check your paperwork
Get the title and a photo ID out before you accept anything. The name on the title has to be yours, and no lender can still be listed on it.
- Odometer reading: required for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, with model year 2010 and older, trailers, and vehicles rated over 16,000 lbs exempt.
- Bill of sale: required.
- State form: Form VP 104.

Only some cars qualify. The rule.
Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
You accept online or on the phone. The buyer passes the job to a tow company near you, and that company contacts you to set a pickup window.
Give the tow company the address where the car is parked, and say if that is not where you live. Tell them if the car is down a dirt road or behind a locked gate.
You meet the driver, sign the title, and take the money. If someone else will do that for you, tell the buyer when you book.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
The truck backs up to the car in a straight line and winches it on. Move whatever is parked in front of it, and open the gate if there is one.
Take everything out of the car before the truck comes: glove box, trunk, door pockets, under the seats and the spare tire well. Take off any toll pass or parking permit. Anything left in the car goes with it.
Plates stay with you. Take them off before the truck arrives.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The driver looks the car over and you sign the back of the title.
You are paid before the car goes on the truck, so count the cash or read the check before it moves.
Sign the bill of sale with the driver and keep a copy for yourself. Keep any paper the driver leaves with you, and check your inbox, because some buyers email the bill of sale and the confirmation instead.
The notice of sale asks for the buyer’s name and address. Take them from the offer confirmation, because the driver works for a tow company and is not the buyer.
Step 6: File the notice and deal with the plates
Cost to move them to another car: $6 to apply an existing registration credit toward another vehicle you own.
How to tell the state: File the Vehicle Resale Notification online through MyDMV within 5 days of the sale.
Deadline: 5 days.
Save the confirmation page or the email. The buyer’s paperwork does not do this for you.
Cancel the insurance last, after the car has gone and the notice is filed. A policy canceled on the morning of the pickup leaves the car uninsured if the truck is late.

What Is Your Junk Car Worth in Nevada?
Buyers in Nevada typically offer $563 for a junk car (cars 10 years and older, 108 offers, ranked 15 of 44 states). Across the country, half of all offers on old cars fall between $375 and $1,075.
Of the junk cars quoted in Nevada, 46% are sedans, coupes and hatchbacks, offered $378 in the middle. Buyers typically offer $370 for cars 15 years and older, from our own quote data.

Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Nevada?
Yes, for some older cars. There are three ways to do it.
Junk it without the title. Nevada’s rule: the vehicle must be last titled in Nevada, model year 2010 or older, and have no liens or a lien release, in which case the buyer and owner of record complete Form VP 012 and a Bill of Sale to transfer ownership; a 2011 or newer vehicle requires the owner to obtain an actual paper title first.
Write on the quote form that the title is missing. Let the buyer say whether it can take the car on that route or needs the replacement first.
Order a replacement title. Every buyer can then quote the car.
Sell the parts yourself. A part changes hands without any title. It takes weeks rather than days, and our guide to selling a car for parts goes through it.
Getting a Replacement Title in Nevada
What a replacement title takes in Nevada:
- Application: Form VP 012
- Fee: $20 when the vehicle is remaining in Nevada, or $35 if it is not physically located or registered in Nevada
- Processing time: approximately 2 to 3 weeks
- Rush option: available with Form VP 265
Send the application first, then ask for quotes while the DMV works on it. The two waits then overlap instead of running one after the other.
If the old title turns up after you have applied, it is no longer valid. Sign the replacement over to the driver, not the old one.
If a lender still holds the title
The lien comes off before any junk buyer can take the car. If the payoff is more than the offer, the difference comes out of your pocket, so get the payoff figure from the lender before you accept anything.
Your lender releases it one of these ways: the lienholder releases the lien electronically through the ELT system and the DMV mails a paper title, or for a paper title the lender completes a Lien Release (Form VP 186).

If your title is electronic
Nevada uses the Electronic Lien and Title system for lienholders only. When a lender holds the title electronically, the lien must be released and a paper title issued before the owner can sell. The driver takes the paper title away with the car, so book the pickup after it has arrived in the mail.
If the car is titled in another state
A car titled in another state sells in Nevada on that title. Say which state issued it on the quote form, and sign that title over the way its own back page asks.
If that title is lost, ask the state that issued it for the replacement. Nevada cannot issue a title for another state.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
The buyer pays whoever is named on the title. When the owner has died, the car goes into your name first: Form VP 024 (Affidavit for Transfer of Title for Estates Without Probate), or Form VP 239 (Transfer on Death) if the owner named a beneficiary, or court documents if the estate is probated. Once the title is in your name, the junk sale is the same as any other.
Nevada’s rule on a gifted car: No form. Apply any exemption at the time of registration, as the DMV does not apply them retroactively.
Somebody else’s car left on your property is not yours to sell. The abandoned vehicle process starts with a call to the police, not with a quote.

A yard pays by weight, and the scrap price changes from week to week. A number given over the phone is for that day.
If you can get the car there on a trailer, there is no tow to pay for. If the yard sends its own truck, ask whether the tow is taken out of the offer.

Selling to an online buyer
An online buyer’s number is in writing before any truck is booked, and the tow is already in it. The price allows for the parts that can be resold, not only the weight of the shell.

The driver can offer less when the car is not as described: a converter that is gone, wheels that are missing, or a car that does not roll.
Nothing obliges you to accept the lower number. Until you sign the title the car is still yours, so you can send the truck away and use one of your other quotes.
