How to Sell a Junk Car in Nevada in Six Steps
The whole thing runs about two to three days if your title is in a drawer at home. Add the processing time if you have to order a replacement.
Step 1: Get quotes from several buyers
Quote forms ask for the year, make, model, mileage, your ZIP code, and what’s wrong with the car. Some ask for the VIN, which is on a small plate at the base of the windshield on the driver side, or on a sticker inside the driver door frame.
A number comes back in about two minutes. Say plainly whether the car runs and whether the catalytic converter is still on it, because those two answers move the offer more than anything else.
The offer isn’t binding on you and there’s no obligation to take it. All three buyers below hold their number for seven days.

Step 2: Check your paperwork
Nevada asks for the same documents however you sell the car, whether the buyer is a neighbor or a scrap yard.

Pull the title out and look at it before you book anything. A lender still listed, a crossed out name, or white-out anywhere on it all mean you need a replacement first.

Step 3: Accept an offer and book the pickup
Once you accept, the buyer hands the job to a local tow company and that company calls you, usually the same day or the next. You agree on a day and a window, not an exact minute.
The person named on the title has to be at the car, with the paperwork and a photo ID that matches. If the names don’t match, the driver can’t complete the pickup.
Pickup in the Las Vegas and Reno areas is often next day. Out past Ely, Winnemucca, or Tonopah, ask about the window before you accept, because a truck may only run your way a couple of times a week.
Step 4: Get the car ready for the tow truck
A flatbed needs room to back in and a straight pull. Move anything parked in front of the car and unlock a gate if it sits behind one.
Empty it out. Check the glovebox, the center console, the trunk, under the seats, and the visors, because a car that’s been sitting collects things you forgot about.
In Nevada, plates stay with the seller, so deal with them while you’re at the car rather than after the truck has gone.
Hand over the keys too if you have them.
Step 5: Sign the title and take payment
The driver looks the car over first to check it matches what you described. Then you sign the title over, fill in the bill of sale, and hand both across.

What Your Junk Car Is Worth in Nevada
Most junk cars are offered $100 to $600. Heavier trucks, vans, and full size SUVs often land between $400 and $1,200, and a car that still runs and drives can go higher.
Two things drive the number. What the car weighs in scrap metal, and which parts are still worth pulling off before it gets crushed.
That’s why two cars of the same age get different offers. A stripped sedan is metal by the pound, and an intact one is a parts car.
The catalytic converter matters most. It holds precious metals, and a car missing its converter is worth a lot less. Say up front whether it’s still there, because the driver will look.
Weight sets the floor. A three ton truck has more metal in it than a compact car, so it starts higher no matter what shape it’s in.
A car that still starts is worth more. Even a rough runner has a working engine and transmission, and those are the two most valuable parts on it.
Common models do better. There’s steady demand for parts off cars people still drive, and less for something nobody’s fixing anymore.
Missing paperwork lowers offers. Buyers taking a car without a clean title in hand are taking on the risk, and offers are lower to match.

Selling a Junk Car Without a Title in Nevada
Whether you can sell without the title in hand depends on the car. Here’s the rule.
Look at who the rule names. Both sides sign, in person, at a Nevada DMV office.
That’s what rules out the national online buyers. Their tow driver collects the car and leaves, and nobody from the company is meeting you at a counter.
So you have three real options.
- Find a local yard willing to do it. If your car meets the rule above, call yards near you and ask whether they’ll make the trip with you. Some will, some won’t, and the ones that do usually offer less.
- Order the duplicate title. This keeps every buyer available to you, and it’s what we’d suggest for most people. Apply now and collect quotes while you wait.

Getting a Replacement Title in Nevada
A duplicate is the fix for a title that’s lost, stolen, torn up, or ruined by white-out. Same form either way.

Your signature on the application has to be witnessed. A DMV employee can do that at the counter for free, so applying in person saves you a separate notary trip.
Apply and get quotes at the same time. Offers don’t hold forever, so start collecting them near the end of the wait rather than the beginning.
If a lender still holds the title
A lien has to come off before anyone can buy the car, even for scrap. Pay the loan off first, then get the lien cleared.
Call the lender the day you pay it off. Nothing moves until they act, so it’s worth chasing.

If your title is electronic
In practice that only reaches you if a lender is in the picture. Own the car outright and your title is paper, so it’s either in your hands or it’s lost.
If the car is titled in another state
A duplicate covers cars that Nevada titled. If the title came from California, Arizona, or anywhere else, request the replacement from that state instead.
You can still sell the car here once that title is in your hands. Where the car sits doesn’t matter to the buyer, only whose name is on the document.
Selling a Junk Car That Isn’t in Your Name
Nevada wants the seller’s name on the title. If it says someone else, the fix depends on why.
The owner died. The heir puts the car in their own name first, then sells it.
Whether probate is needed at all comes down to the size of the estate.
Estate threshold: $25,000 or less in Nevada property excluding vehicles, or $100,000 for a surviving spouse, at least 40 days after death
Someone gave you the car but never signed it over. Track them down and finish the transfer properly.
How a gift transfer works: No form. Apply any exemption at the time of registration, as the DMV does not apply them retroactively

What Counts as a Junk Car
Junk car isn’t a category you apply for. It’s the label buyers use for a car worth less than fixing.
A salvage brand on the title is a separate thing, and it doesn’t stop the sale.

Can I sell a junk car with a loan on it in Nevada?
Not until the lien is cleared. The lender has an interest in the car and no buyer can work around it.
Pay the loan off, then have the lender release the lien so a clean title reaches you.
What happens to my junk car after I sell it in Nevada?
It goes to a yard, where anything resellable gets pulled off and the fluids are drained.
